SEM students attend Sport Management Coalition Symposium

Nearly two-dozen Elon University students traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina, for a March 15 conference to hear from marketing professionals and industry leaders. 

Elon University sport and event management students traveled to Charlotte to attend the inaugural Sport Management Coalition Symposium, held at Charlotte’s BB&T Ballpark.

​Led by Assistant Professor Craig Schmitt, a group of 23 students majoring or minoring in sport and event management attended the inaugural Sport Management Coalition Symposium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The March 15 event was held at BB&T Ballpark, home of the Charlotte Knights minor league baseball organization.

The one-day symposium included a panel discussion and breakout sessions with marketing professionals and industry leaders from the Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Knights, ESPN, Wells Fargo Championship, Joe Gibbs Racing, UNC-Charlotte athletics, and Bespoke Sports & Entertainment.

During a working lunch, students were randomly placed in groups and asked to develop potential marketing strategies. The symposium closed with a marketing session led by Mark Smith, vice president of marketing for the Knights, who evaluated the marketing pitches and discussed his club’s marketing and promotional tactics.

​In all 80 students attended the event hailing from six universities: Elon, Pfeiffer University, Gardner-Webb University, Johnson C. Smith University, Queens University of Charlotte and Wingate University. ​Wingate’s Master of Arts in Sport Management sponsored the symposium.
