National Freshman of the Week honor goes to Elon's Davis Cheek
The quarterback helped lead the Phoenix to its sixth-straight win on Saturday with a victory over the University of Rhode Island.
After being named the co-CAA Football Rookie of the Week earlier in the day, Elon University quarterback Davis Cheek has been named the STATS FCS National Freshman of the Week, the organization announced on Monday, Oct. 23.,
The honor follows another win by Elon and another jump in the national rankings, with the Phoenix claiming the No. 10 spot in the STATS FCS Poll on Monday.
In Elon's 35-34 win over the University of Rhode Island on Saturday, Cheek threw for a personal best 331 yards as he completed 23 of his 34 passes. For the third time this season, Cheek tossed three touchdown passes, including a career-long completion of 65 yards on a touchdown strike to Corey Joyner. In leading the Phoenix to its sixth consecutive win, Cheek engineered his third fourth-quarter comeback this season.
On the season, Cheek has completed 93 of his 148 passes for 1,193 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has also rushed for 75 yards and two scores.
This marks the seventh time that an Elon player has earned a STATS (previously The Sports Network) national player of the week honor.
Elon will look for its seventh consecutive victory on Saturday, Oct. 28, when the maroon and gold visits Villanova for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
