Elon students complete competency-based HR certification
Five Martha and Spencer Love School of Business students earned Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional designation, the global standard in certification for the human resources profession.

Jenna Bayer ’19, Sarah Davis ’18, Grace Ring ’19, Mollie Sommers ’19 and Roxanna Wood ’19 passed the Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) examination earlier this year, indicating they hold a high level of human resources knowledge.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the largest human resources professionals’ organization worldwide with over 100,000 members. Sixty percent of the SHRM-CP exam focuses strictly on knowledge-based questions while the other 40 percent represent scenario-based situational judgment items.
“The SHRM-CP evaluates whether the certifying individual holds capabilities in key HR competencies and knowledge areas,” said Bayer, who is currently researching the demand for human resource certification in the United States. “Specifically, the exam is based off the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™), which outlines eight behavioral competencies and 15 specific HR knowledge areas that together enable effective HR job performance.”
Students who are enrolled in their final year of an undergraduate or graduate degree program at a college or university that has been recognized by SHRM’s Academic Initiatives staff as being aligned to SHRM’s curriculum guidelines are eligible to sit for the SHRM-CP exam. Students must also have accumulated at least 500 hours of an internship or practical HR experience and must be in good standing with their school.
In 2017, SHRM recognized Elon’s Human Resource Management Career Track as being fully aligned with SHRM curriculum standards. Elon also hosts a SHRM student chapter advised by Associate Professor Brian Lyons.
