Elon
School of Communications professor Vic Costello and a colleague,
Barbara Moore of the University of Tennessee, participated in a
research symposium on Feb. 28 at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
Their paper
"The Resurfacing of the Active Audience: An Examination of
Television-Viewer Involvement Within the Social Communities of the
Internet," was presented during the 25th Annual Research Symposium
for the College of Communications and Information.
Costello and
Moore examined responses from 757 television fans who commented
on their use of the Internet for keeping up with a favorite television
show and for interacting with other fans through online channels
of communication.
The data was coded and analyzed within the framework of theories
dealing with television-audience activity.
Costello and
Moore plan to submit their findings for publication later this spring.
