The School
of Communications has a new curriculum, and current students can
choose to remain in the old or move to the new. The new curriculum
is a 52-hour major that integrates four themes - global, digital,
high ideals and a required internship - into coursework that already
emphasizes writing, research and analytical thinking.
For instance,
the opening course is renamed Communications in a Global Society,
and a new core course is titled Digital Media Convergence.
The curriculum
also features courses that reflect the highest ideas of the disciplines,
such as serving the public good and promoting citizenship in a democracy.
At present,
about three-fourths of the students in the School of Communications
voluntarily do a professional internship before graduation; the
new curriculum requires one.
Two of the
emphases in the Communications major will have new names: Broadcast
Communications becomes Broadcast and New Media, and Film Studies
becomes Cinema.
To help students
decide whether to stay in the old curriculum or move to the new,
here is a comparison. If students go to the new, then they need
to fulfill all requirements of that curriculum; but any course already
completed will count toward the new curriculum. For instance, JCM
215 Introduction to Communications fulfills the requirement for
the new JCM 200 Communications in a Global Society.
