Distinguished
ethicist and international scholar Dr. John Merrill returned to
the School of Communications at Elon in Winter Term 2003 to teach
a special course, Global Press Freedom & Ethics.
Thirteen students
joined Merrill in the three-week daily seminar class. Merrill, professor
emeritus at the University of Missouri, first taught at Elon in
Winter Term 2002. He liked it so much he returned this year to do
a different course.
Merrill is
the author of 24 books, the most recent being "Twilight of
Press Freedom: Rise of People's Journalism" (2000) and the
upcoming "Global Journalism" (expected in 2003). One
of his most creative books was "The Princely Press: Machiavelli
on American Journalism" (1998).
He has been
a long-term visiting professor in Taiwan, Egypt and Singapore, and
has lectured in another 30 nations.
After completing
his Winter Term course at Elon, Merrill shifted over to the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he is serving the spring
2003 semester as Park Professor.
