Each
spring, a select group of high school seniors who will be enrolling
at Elon the following fall are chosen to become Communications Fellows.
2003 Freshman communications students who are members of this group
agreed to supply a bit of biographical background. Here, you can meet
the new Fellows:
Kelly Robison is from Glen Allen, Va. She expects to major
in communications with an emphasis in broadcasting. "Elon offers
a world of opportunities, of which I am going to take full advantage,"
she says. Robison says she plans to study abroad next year. Her
likely destination is Australia. She is shooting to earn an internship
at CMT (Country Music Television), located in Nashville, Tenn. You
may have seen her perform at halftime of Phoenix football games;
she is the featured baton twirler for Elon.
Andrew High is from Durham, N.C. He was sports editor of
his high school paper. He has already begun writing for The Pendulum,
covering Elon sports, and says he looks forward to working with
other Elon media. He is also joining the Elon chapter of the Society
of Professional Journalists. "This seems like a place where I can
get a lot of good experience," he said. "Elon is such a great place
academically and socially."
Mike
Vivenzio is from Raleigh, N.C. He is orginally from the New
York, New Jersey area. He plans to double major in Communications
with a Broadcasting emphasis and in Journalism and minor in Business
Administration. He says he hopes to work at ESPN one day as an anchor
on "Sports Center." He was the sports editor for his high
school's newspaper. While at Elon he is hoping to have his own sports-oriented
television and radio shows.
Elizabeth
Colquitt is from Kingsport, Tenn. She was editor of her high
school yearbook. Her major at Elon is Journalism combined with either
pre-med or a double major in international relations. She plans
to use her journalism degree to convey information about her second
field to the public, possibly as a featured columnist in a news
magazine. "I want to be a specialized writer, and I think Elon will
really prepare me for whatever I decide to do," she says. Colquitt
also plans to study abroad in Italy.
Michelle
Tufts is from Symmes Township, Ohio. She expects to major in
Communications with an emphasis in broadcast and a Political Science
minor. Her career goal is to be an on-camera reporter and work her
way up to anchoring one of the "Big Three" networks' nightly
newscasts. She expects to study abroad while at Elon. "I can't
wait to experience all that Elon has to offer," she says. "My
dream internship would be with NBC News in Washington D.C.; I want
to get inside the White House."
Jason
Spinos is from Midlothian, Va. He is an aspiring actor and filmmaker.
He has performed in over a dozen theatrical productions and as an
extra in the HBO film "Iron-Jawed Angels." He has been
making short films for the last few years, including a music video
for his high school chorus department. While at Elon, he plans to
intern in Los Angeles or in New York.
Leanne
Jernigan is from San Antonio, Texas. She was editor of her high
school newspaper and played on the varsity tennis team. She served
as a teen adviser for the local San Antonio newspaper several years,
giving input and writing guest columns. She expects to major in
Journalism. "I am so excited to be a Communications Fellow,"
she said. "The opportunities Elon has to offer me are great."
She plans to travel abroad and study journalism in different countries.
"I can't wait to get a summer internship in a big city such as New
York."
Shantia
Stanley is from Kinston, N.C. She was active in many groups
in high school, volunteered at a nearby hospital and was goalie
on her varsity soccer team. She enjoys public speaking, and competed
in several local, regional and state competitions. "Being chosen
to be a Journalism and Communications Fellow is extremely exciting
for me." she said. "When I came for the interview, I would
have never thought that I would be chosen!" Her goal is to be a
news broadcaster and someday work for CNN, ABC or BET.
Ashley
Feibish is from Richmond, Va. "At this point, I plan to
major in corporate communications," she said, "but I am
also exploring the possibility of majoring in journalism."
She was the co-editor of her high school yearbook and wrote articles
for her high school newspaper. She says she would like to do an
internship at a fashion magazine such as Glamour. She expects to
study abroad - possibly in Elon's London program.
Kristin
Tremoulis is from Lima, Ohio. She expects to major in Corporate
Communications, but she also said, "I have so many interests that
I could also see myself producing or writing." In addition to her
activities as a Communications Fellow and student, she represents
the Phoenix on the women's golf team. She plans to be involved in
as much as she can while attending Elon. "I would love to have an
internship with the PGA, and I very much want to study abroad,"
she said.
Kelly
Jeffrey is from Caldwell, N.J. She says she has always known
she'd go into the field of communications due to her talkative and
outgoing nature. In high school, she was involved with both the
school newspaper and yearbook, but she plans to focus on broadcasting
here at Elon. Her dream internship would be with MTV. "I'm excited
to be a communications fellow at Elon," she said. "I've already
learned so much from the other fellows, and I'm excited to continue
learning about communications, here and hopefully abroad."
Stevie
Kloeber is from a suburb of St. Paul, Minn. Throughout her three
years in high school, she participated on the studio production
team, and during her senior year she worked as producer of the Minnesota
High School Quiz Bowl League, which aired on local public-access
stations throughout the Twin Cities. She is majoring in Communications
with a concentration in Film. "I want to make films that depict
the culture of Minnesota that has developed from its history,"
she said.
Kyle
Drexler is from Charlotte, N.C. As a student, he directed short
films, made a documentary covering competitive videogaming, and
edited/produced tracks for local musical talent. Over the summer,
he worked at his school district's telecommunications building as
an assistant web designer. "At Elon, I hope to expand my knowledge
of filming techniques, and audio editing," he said. "I'd
also like to gain experience in the role of art director. My dream
internship would be to travel with a film crew in Europe."
Jillian
Baer is from Dublin, Ohio. She produced a morning TV show for
the 2,000 students at her high school and also produced a bi-weekly
high school news magazine show that received the Crystal Communicator
Award three consecutive years. A Broadcast major at Elon, she works
with the "Touchdown Phoenix Football"
TV program. "It is so great to have so many opportunities so
early in my college career," she said. "I can't wait to
get involved with internships and the study abroad program."
Laura
Hersh
is from Cleveland, Ohio. In high school, she helped create a music
video, short film and documentary. The documentary was entered in
a national competition. She will major in Communications with an
emphasis in film at Elon. "I can't wait to get involved in the media
here at Elon," she said. "I see it as practice for the day I work
on major motion pictures." She will also minor in Spanish and she
hopes to use the language to her advantage as she pursues a competitive
career in the world of mass media.
