School
of Communications faculty members Mark Fox and Vic Costello led
three other adults and 25 young people to work at Operation Christmas
Child in Boone, N.C., on a weekend just before the holidays.
The mostly volunteer-powered
Operation Christmas Child delivers nearly 7 million gift boxes to
children around the world each Christmas. It is a ministry of Samaritan's
Purse, founded by Franklin Graham. The grassroots effort encourages
people from everywhere to find and fill an empty shoebox with various
useful, fun gifts for children of a specific age group. The boxes
are collected together at a distribution facility and are sent to
children who would otherwise receive no gift at Christmas.
Costello and Fox collected
a number of boxes packed by faculty and staff members at Elon University
and brought them to Boone. Their group helped process 3,500 boxes
that were to be sent to Botswana.
