Costello named
service scholar

Vic Costello of the School of Communications was chosen to be among a handful of Elon University faculty members invited to be Service-Learning Faculty Scholars for the 2004-05 school year.

Costello has been involved in various service-learning projects with local organizations in Alamance County, including the production of a promotional video for the Alamance County chapter of the Special Olympics. He and his students have teamed in the past to help the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce produce a local program called "It's Your Business." And in 2002, students enrolled in his Corporate Video course produced promotional videos for 19 non-profit organizations, including the Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Piedmont, Alamance County Community YMCA, Alamance Children's Theater and Alamance County Dispute Settlement Center.

Costello won his service-learning scholar position in order to carry out more special projects for the Alamance County Area Chamber of Commerce, integrating the production of future episodes of "It's Your Business" in his sections of JCM 352 Corporate Video, an upper-level, advanced production course.

The outcome of the service-learning component of the courses will be the production of a minimum of 12 monthly episodes per year of the program.

Linda Lashendock of Elon's Television Services Department has committed to enhance the Corporate Video experience for students by offering the tutoring and advice of advanced student mentors who will serve as production supervisors and work with Costello to provide necessary continuity from semester to semester.

The program will feature segments on both for-profit and non-profit members of the Chamber of Commerce and will include features on local community service activities and on the general economic welfare of the community.

Notable non-profit members of the Chamber of Commerce are the Red Cross, YMCA, Meals on Wheels, the Cancer Society, Goodwill, the Humane Society, Guardian Ad Litem and the Arts Council.

Students enrolled in the classes will work directly with the client representatives of these organizations and produce feature segments for inclusion in the "It's Your Business" program.
