of Communications faculty member Frances Ward-Johnson was selected
as a Journalism Educators Fellow by the American Press Institute
and attended the annual Journalism Educator's seminar June 6-10.
Funded by
an endowment from the John Ben Snow Memorial Trust, the week-long
seminar exposed 22 educators from selected colleges and universities
to the latest trends in the newspaper industry, from the challenges
of electronic media and convergence to issues in writing and editing.
Attendees also
discussed other critical topics, including strategies for helping
students market themselves to prospective employers.
Discussion
leaders for this year's seminar included Doug Feaver, vice president,
Washingtonpost, Newsweek Interactive, Arlington, Va.; Joseph Grimm,
recruiting and development editor, Detroit Free Press; and Richard
Weiss, writing coach, St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Participants also
visited the Freedom Forum Foundation's First Amendment Center in
Arlington, Va.
