The Safety Committee
The Safety Committee is an advisory committee to the Vice President
for Business, Finance and Technology. Members are appointed by
the Vice President for Business, Finance and Technology. The committee
is responsible for advising the Vice President on matters of policy
and procedure for safety issues on the campus including the following:
- Emergency response
- Disaster planning
- Hazard communication
- Training programs
- Confined spaces
- Safety handbooks
- Eyewear policies
- Contractor safety issues
- Campus eyewash installation
- Fire drills and escape procedures
- Building renovations
- Smoking policies
- Snow removal
- Snow policies

- Property damage reports
- Student health and safety
- Employee labor laws
- Workers compensation
- Vaccination and shots programs
- Environmental compliance
- Indoor air quality

The Committee is currently chaired by the Assistant Vice President
for Business and Finance (x5428). Committee members include representatives
from the following departments:

The Safety Committee has the following responsibilities:
- Members should attend all meetings and support all committee
activities.
- To aid in the development of university safety policies.
- Will make monthly inspections of the university and make recommendations
necessary to correct unsafe acts or conditions.
- Committee should review and discuss all accident reports having
occurred during the previous month. Should also determine whether
or not effective corrective action has been taken to prevent a
recurrence.
- Review and select various safety training and motivational
programs and make recommendations for their use to management.
- Investigate new equipment and processes for hazards.
- Assist staff in evaluating safety equipment such as clothing,
protective devices, etc.
- Minutes should be kept for each meeting with a copy sent to
each member. A review of previous meeting minutes should be made
to check action on outstanding business.
The Safety Committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month
at 8:15 am at Harden Cafeteria. Safety Committee Minutes are recorded
and distributed to all members. Copies of all minutes starting
from 1989 are maintained in the Assistant Vice President of Business
and Finance Office. All committee members have a "Safety"
notebook for maintaining safety policies and meeting minutes.
