Civic Engagement

Elon is a community of active citizens!

Elon university encourages the entire campus community to engage in learning experiences that connect academic and real-world needs. By partnering with the community outside the campus, Elon hopes to instill a sense of civic responsibility in its students, faculty and staff. The Elon community helps build stronger local and global communities through several programs. The university's Council on Civic Engagement includes representatives from these programs and works to strengthen the civic mission and its practices across the full range of university activities.

SPOTLIGHT

Darris Means

Current Assistant Director of Student Life and Leadership Development for Elon Academy, Darris Means, is selected as this month’s spotlight individual for civic engagement. Means graduated from Elon University in 2005 with degrees in Political Science and Sociology. He continued his education at Clemson University, graduating in 2007 with a Master’s degree in Counseling Education and an emphasis on Student Affairs. Means has served a two year term on the Elon University Board of Trustees as the Youth Trustee Member. He is currently a member of Elon University’s National Alumni Executive Board and a member of Elon University’s Young Alumni Council. At Elon University, Means belongs to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and currently serves as the society’s chapter advisor. Means is highly involved in the community as he serves on the Alamance County Closing the Achievement Gap Committee and is a member of the North Carolina College Personnel Association and American College Personnel Association’s Commission for Social Justice Educators. In 2007, Means was awarded the Diversity Leadership Award from the Richard Riley Institute at Furman University, which awards six businesses or individuals who promote diversity and serve the community with their leadership skills. Means won the award in the student category, recognizing his excellence in promoting diversity on campus at Clemson University and strong leadership abilities. Most recently, the Triad Business Journal named Means one of the Triad area’s “40 Leaders Under Forty”. This award recognizes Means commitment to being a positive influence and constructive force in his community. Elon University celebrates Darris Means’ continued dedication to civic engagement.

Clinton Global Initiative University
2009 Student Application

The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) 2009 student application is an initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation that inspires the next generation of leaders to take effective action on pressing global challenges.

Universities are witnessing a growing number of students with the potential and passion to make a difference in the world. To advance these efforts, CGI U is pleased to invite young leaders from your campus to join President Clinton, students, activists, and university administrators at the CGI U second Annual Meeting from February 13 to15, 2009 at University of Texas at Austin.

CGI U places emphasis on action by helping young leaders to take concrete steps toward addressing issues in the areas of education, energy & climate change, human rights & peace, global health, and poverty alleviation. Each attendee makes a Commitment to Action - a tangible contribution toward solving a specific problem on his or her campus or in the wider global community.

Since the inaugural meeting in March 2008 at Tulane University, nearly 1,000 commitments have already been made by students and universities worldwide. Don’t miss out - apply today, make your own commitments, and connect with other students who want to make
a difference.

Attending CGI U is FREE and travel assistance is available for those who qualify. The deadline for early decision applications to CGI U is November 7, 2008. The final deadline for applications is December 12, 2008.
Make sure your school is represented and encourage your students to apply today.

Habitat for Humanity

Twenty years ago, Elon Habitat was chartered as the 30th campus chapter in the nation. Fifteen years ago, the Elon Chapter of HFH became the first campus chapter to commit to fully funding and building one house each year. Work has recently begun on our 18th house in Alamance County for Tashea Dixon and her two children. We are asking for your support to help us to raise the money necessary to fund this house. Your gift of $30 will pay for one square foot of this house. In honor of our 20th anniversary, please consider donating a gift of $100 or even $200. Please return your donation to Cindy Goodson, Elon Habitat Square Foot Coordinator, Truitt Center, Campus Box 2960. Checks may be made payable to Elon University-Habitat for Humanity, with Square Foot Club written in the memo line.

Please contact me cgoodson@elon.edu
if you have any questions
about the
Square Foot Club.

We are grateful for
your support.
