Angela Lewellyn Jones is an Associate Dean of Elon College, the College of Arts & Sciences.  She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from North Carolina State University in 1999, and has been a member of the faculty at Elon University since 1998.  She teaches courses related to Social Problems, Violence in Families, Criminology, Social Deviance, and Sociology of Gender.

SUMMARY OF SELECT ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

Associate Dean:

• Maintain a balanced budget for the College (approximately $23 million).
• Conduct performance reviews for the full faculty of the College (19 departments, 240 faculty) and determine contract specifics for the coming year.
• Review budget requests and prioritize the needs of the College.
• Provide leadership for a faculty & staff team that organizes “Celebrate! Student Achievements in Academics and the Arts” each spring (a weeklong celebration that combines student undergraduate research forum and multiple other events across campus)
• Serve as a member of both the Provost’s Advisory Council and the Academic Affairs Advisory Council.

Chair of Sociology & Anthropology Department:

• Maintain a balanced budget for the department.
• Submit budget requests and new faculty position requests as needed.
• Complete requested reports (e.g., End-of-year, five year plans, etc.) in a timely manner.
• Conduct annual reviews of each department member, and report to the dean’s office on my assessments.
• Provide leadership for faculty subcommittees to assess the department curricula and make appropriate recommendations for revisions and expansions (e.g., addition of new Anthropology major).

Academic Coordinator of Civic Engagement Scholars program:

• Developed and implemented a new curriculum for the program and recruited the first two cohorts of students to enroll. 
• Taught the foundational course for the program (SOC 220: Social Issues & Problems in the Local Community).
• Recruited faculty to become involved in the teaching of courses and the mentoring of students in the program. 
• Worked closely with the advisory committee to revise the curriculum in 2010 following two years of experience with students. 

Coordinator of Elon’s Women’s/Gender Studies program:

• Organized a faculty committee of eight WGS faculty to develop a capstone course (WGS 300: Current Controversies in Feminism) that is now rotated among the faculty.
• Implemented the student award for a graduating senior WGS minor in honor of one of the founding mothers of WGS at Elon, Martha Smith.

$2250 Community Partnership Initiative Grant for an academic service-learning project in HSS 349 WG/CJ: Violence in Families in the fall of 2010, partnering with Family Abuse Services of Alamance County to deliver the Mentors in Violence Prevention program to the local ninth grade health classes in the Alamance-Burlington School System.

$8000 Summer Research and Development Fellowship to conduct assessment research on the Mentors in Violence Prevention program that students in HSS 349 provide for the Alamance-Burlington School System 9^th grade health courses.  Elon University.  June 1 - August 2010. [This funding was declined when I received the Associate Dean position, which began on June 1, 2010.]

$1800 Community Partnership Initiative Grant for social entrepreneurship scholars projects that will be generated within SOC 273: Social Issues & Problems in the Local Community in the fall of 2008, partnering with various community agencies that work with children’s / health issues and environmental issues.

$1600 Community Partnership Initiative Grant for an academic service learning project in HUS 349 WG/CJ: Violence in Families in the fall of 2008, partnering with Family Abuse Services of Alamance County.

$1450 Community Partnership Initiative Grant for an academic service learning project in HUS 349 WG/CJ: Violence in Families in the fall of 2006, partnering with Family Abuse Services of Alamance County.

$4000 Fund for Excellence Grant for the Women’s/Gender Studies Program to develop a “Centering Women & Gender” Series for the 2006-07 school year, along with six other WGS faculty. 

$2000 Faculty Development Grant for the Women's/Gender Studies Program from the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences to develop a required course for the minor with five other faculty members involved in the program.  Summer 2003. 

$4,635 Summer Research and Development Fellowship to continue research of battered women who are currently incarcerated in North Carolina for killing their intimate, abusive partners.  Elon College.  June 1 - August 15, 2001.

Partner Faculty Member on Preparing Future Faculty initiative housed at North Carolina State University, which received an American Sociological Association/National Science Foundation grant for $20,000 and NC State provides matching funds.  (Fall 2000 - Spring 2002).
