Brief Biography

I have been teaching philosophy at Elon since the fall of 1990. In addition to Critical Thinking and Ethical Practice at the introductory level, my primary upper-level focus is in the Philosophy of Law. One way that I make my philosophy teaching practical is that I put my Ethical Practice students through a full mediation training. The thought is that the mediator's skills and sensitivities are essentially ethical life skills that will transfer from training to the philosophy student's life. I have recently become interested in the "philosophical counseling" movement and I want to explore ways that philosophy students can extend their undergraduate education into a life of exploration and service to their communities. In addition to my teaching position, I also am actively engaged as a prelaw advisor in the Elon University Prelaw Program.  In this capacity, I served as chair of the Prelaw Advisors National Council (2003-2005) and President of the Southern Association of Prelaw Advisors (1998-1999).

On a personal level, I have been married to Lily since June 1985. Our daughter, Jennifer, is an Elon graduate and is working at SAS Institute in Cary, NC. Our son, Greg, is currently attending Elon Univ.

I enjoy woodworking, cooking, and traveling.
