Brief Biography

George Padgett was educated at Murray State University (BA, 1970, MA, 1971) and Ohio University (Ph.D, 1980). He worked professionally as a newspaper reporter and editor in South Carolina and Illinois and as director of publications at a specialty publisher in Indiana.  He has taught a variety of courses at Mississippi State University, Illinois State University and Elon University: Reporting & Newswriting, Feature Writing, Magazine Editing & Production, Advanced Reporting, Photography, Culture of Media, Media Ethics, Media Law and British Media (in London).  Padgett served as chair of the Department of Journalism & Communications at Elon University, 1992-2000. He has advised student publications and student organizations including both the Society of Professional Journalists and Lambda Pi Eta. He is a member of the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communications and a past member of the Society of Professional Journalists.  His articles on media law and media issues have appeared in Journalism Quarterly, Mass Comm Review, Journalism Educator, Journal of Mass Media Ethics, Grassroots Editor, Quill and Editor & Publisher. He also has written on antiques and collectibles for several collectors publications and local magazines.  He currently is doing research in the areas media law, diversity, and book publishing.
