Brief Biography

Michael SanfordProfessor of Art

Michael Sanford is a sculptor and ceramist whose palette of materials includes clay, wood, glass, cement, metal, fibers, and found objects. His most recent work playfully engages parody, political satire and exaggeration of political narrative. He is also developing a series of altered wheel-thrown sculptures that incorporates issues of ambiguity, sensuality, animation, and subtle shifts in color and surface texture. In addition to his mixed media sculptural works, Sanford makes functional utilitarian ceramic wares.

He actively exhibits his art work, including shows at Grounds for Sculpture (Hamilton, NJ), The Brush Art Gallery (Lowell, MA); Washington Square (Washington, DC); Moore College of Art and Design (Philadelphia, PA);  The NC Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition (Greensboro, NC); Sawtooth Center for the Arts (Winston-Salem, NC); Art Station Gallery (Aukland, New Zealand); Expressions Art Centre (Upper Hutt, New Zealand); The Percy Thompson Gallery (Aukland, New Zealand); Tyson’s II Corporate Center (Vienna, VA); Pope’s Gallery (Charlotte, NC); Greenhill Center for NC Art (Greensboro, NC); and numerous universities and colleges throughout the south and midwest.

Coming to Elon in 1988, he coordinates the ceramics area of the art program and teaches 3-Dimensional Design.
