Helen Walton joined the math department in 1984. She teaches developmental and freshman level courses. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she was actively involved in preparing the successful application to shelter a chapter on the Elon campus. The new chapter was installed in April, 2010, and she currently serves as Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian.
She has three children. Her oldest son, Drew, is an engineer for Hewlett Packard in California. Her daughter, Charlotte, is the Chief Financial Officer for Merge Records in Durham. Her younger son, Jeff, is a planner for the City of Wilmington. All are married, and Drew has three children.
Professor Walton has been actively involved with several community organizations. Her passion is historic preservation, and she served as chairman of the Burlington Historic Preservation Commission for many years. She is a founding member of the board of directors of the Textile Heritage Museum, located north of Burlington. Additionally, she serves as the Secretary of the Administrative Council of Front Street United Methodist Church.
