Historical Note

As stated in the Preamble of the Constitution of the Elon College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, "Habitat for Humanity International Inc., a Georgia nonprofit corporation ("Habitat for Humanity" or "Habitat") is an ecumenical Christian Housing organization that works in partnership with people in need to improve the conditions in which they are forced to live." (folder title: Undated-Constitutions and by-laws) According to Article II of the Constitution of the Elon College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, "The foundation of the campus chapters program is based on 1 John 3:18 (KATA I^ANNHNIII.XVIII in Greek): 'Our love should not be just works and talk, it must be true love, which shows itself in action' as well as 'Building in Partnership' ("Aedifcare in Societate" in Latin)." The national organization was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, and has since then built thousands of homes both in the United States and abroad. Chapter membership at Elon is open to all involved on campus including, but not limited to, students, faculty, administrators, and staff. In the 1980's, there were meetings once per month during the academic year. Elon University Habitat Volunteers participate in annual service trips to build, renovate, and assist after disasters.

The Elon College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity received charter in September of 1988. It was chartered by college chaplain, Richard McBride and officially founded by John Barnhill. It was one of the first 30 chapters of Habitat for Humanity in the nation. The Elon Chapter raises money to construct the houses through fundraising on and off campus and donations from supporters. The first major project was a complete renovation project finished in the fall of 1989. The first house constructed was completed in the fall of 1991. The Elon College Chapter of Habitat for Humanity has been recognized by former United States President Jimmy Carter and co-founder of Habitat for Humanity International, Millard Fuller. It was named campus organization of the year in the spring of 1995. The Elon Chapter also received the Campus Chapter Education Award from Habitat for Humanity International. This award recognizes the student, staff, and faculty involvement in reaching the ideals of Habitat for Humanity.
