Historical Note

The idea of changing the name of the Elon College to Elon University first occurred in 1992 when Wallace Chandler suggested the name change. Chandler graduated from Elon in 1949 and was Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the time. Plans to officially change the name began in 1994. The name change was also a component of The Elon Vision fundraising campaign which sought campus-wide improvements. Campus improvements included new construction, increased number of faculty, higher student enrollment, NCAA Division 1 athletics, and the addition of graduate programs to name several, all to distinguish Elon as a premier institution on the Eastern seaboard. The final goal of the campaign was to transform Elon College to Elon University. Trustees unanimously voted in favor of the name change on October 11, 2000. Along with the name change, the New Century at Elon strategic and fundraising campaign began.

University Day marked the official name change on June 1, 2001. Elon President Leo M. Lambert, Board of Trustees Chair, Noel Allen, and Board Secretary, Ed Powell, signed the university's new charter. The ceremony was held in Moseley Center and all that attended the ceremony were invited to sign their name in a ledger.
