Scope and Content Note

This collection contains printed and visual materials that pertain to the first president of Elon College, William Samuel Long. The items in this collection are not necessarily papers that were generated by him during his tenure as president of Elon College during 1889-1894, but materials that have been collected by others over the years that relate to W.S. Long. The few original items in the collection from W.S. Long can be found in the following series': Correspondence and Literary Productions. There is a combination of original and reproduced materials throughout this collection.

The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into five series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Books; Correspondence; Literary Productions; Photographs; Printed Material.

The majority of the items in both the Books and Correspondence series do not directly pertain to William S. Long. However, within the Correspondence series, there is a letter that discusses the various locations on campus where the portrait of W.S. Long has been displayed (2:6).

The Literary Productions series is the largest in the collection, and contains the most information about William S. Long, his careers, and his relation to Elon College. The majority of this series is comprised of handwritten sermons, both from William S. Long and Reverend James Willis Wellons (3:12-3:27). Other items in this series, such as essays and manuscripts, offer rich details concerning W.S. Long, his family, careers, and his role as Elon College's first president (3:1-3:10). The Printed Material series also contains both biographical and genealogical information relating to W.S. Long, primarily documented in newspaper clippings (5:5-5:17). The Photographs in this collection show images of W.S. Long, his wife, his younger brother Daniel Albright Long, founding fathers of Elon College, and James Willis Wellons (4:1-4:4).

This collection is a great resource for anyone doing research on William Samuel Long, the Long family, his contributions to Graham Normal College, Elon College, and the history of education in North Carolina. The collection is a good starting place for genealogical information about the Long family, as well as general information about the early days of Elon College, especially in relation to William S. Long.

Detailed Description of the Collection

1. Books. 1870 and 1889.
3 Folders. 3 Items.
This small series in the collection only contains three Books. The Book of most historical interest is the one titled Manual of the order of the Eastern Star: containing the symbols, scriptural illustrations, lectures, etc…adapted to the system of adoptive masonry, 1870 (1:2). This particular Book contains information relating to the female freemasonry of the Eastern Star Masonic Lodges. While this Book may be historically interesting, it has no relation to William S. Long.

2. Correspondence. Inclusive: 1889-2006. Bulk: 1920s and 1960s.
12 Folders. 15 Items.
The Correspondence series contains letters, postcards, and emails. Not only do the types of Correspondence vary greatly, so do the range of dates. Many of the letters from the 1920's are either from Rev. James Willis Wellons or President William Allen Harper (Elon College) and have no relation and/or mention of William S. Long (2:3-2:4). Of particular interest is a letter from 1966 which outlines Holleman and Long family ties and descendants of William S. Long (2:5). Moreover, discussion about William S. Long's portrait and the various places it has hung around campus is mentioned in a letter from 1967 (2:6). While the handwriting is original and unique on a postcard to William S. Long from Emmett L. Moffitt in 1894 (former Elon president), the content appears to be general with not a lot of detail (2:9).

3. Literary Productions. Inclusive: 1882-1956. Bulk: 1890s-early 1900s.
27 Folders. ca. 32 Items.
The Literary Productions series is the largest in the collection. Primarily, it contains handwritten sermons by William S. Long and Rev. James Willis Wellons (3:12-3:27). The majority of other types of Literary Productions include typewritten essays and manuscripts dating from the early 1900's to the 1940's/50's that primarily pertain to the family of William S. Long (3:1-3:10). Most biographical and genealogical information about William S. Long and the Long family can be found in this series. The essays written in the early 1900's discuss W.S. Long's role in the establishment of Graham Normal College and how he eventually became Elon's first president (3:1, 3:2, 3:5, 3:6). Of particular interest is an unpublished manuscript that W.S. Long wrote titled A Treatise on Christian Theology, Embracing Biblical, Historical, and Systematic, 1913 (3:9). The original manuscript is located in the collection (3:9), while the photocopied version has been bound and cataloged as part of the church history collection. An earlier version of this manuscript titled Systematic Theology was not part of this manuscript collection, but can be found in the online library catalog.

This small collection of Photographs contains images of William S. Long and his first wife as well as other important players in Elon's history. Typically, William S. Long is pictured without a beard, but this series contains a few unique images of him with a beard (more than likely in his younger days) (4:2, 4:3). Also contained in this series is the well-known picture of W.S. Long and all the founders of Elon College (4:3). Additionally, this series contains a picture of W.S. Long and his younger brother Daniel Albright Long in the late 1890's (4:3). One of the founding ministers of Elon College, and an acquaintance of W.S. Long is also pictured in this series, Reverend James Willis Wellons. Rev. Wellons is pictured standing in front of the post office in Franklinton, NC in 1921 (4:4).

18 Folders. ca. 35 Items.
The Printed Material series is the second largest in the collection, containing a variety of formats. Primarily this series contains newspaper clippings pertaining to W.S. Long and his careers (5:5-5:17). Additional genealogical and biographical information about W.S. Long and the Long family can be found in this series by consulting the somewhat detailed family trees (5:1, 5:2). Many of the newspaper clippings from the late 1880's discuss W.S. Long's role in Graham Normal College and his transition to becoming Elon's first president (5:5-5:7). Additionally, there is a copy of W.S. Long's resignation announcement/speech from Elon College in 1894 (5:8).
Furthermore, a newspaper article detailing the gift of the W.S. Long portrait to the college can be found in this series (5:17). Not only does the newspaper article discuss the events surrounding the gift from the Long family and where it was to be hung on campus, but additional biographical information about W.S. Long is mentioned (5:17).
