Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a letter, photographs, and newspaper clippings that relate to the visit made by Bill Clinton and Al Gore to Elon College during their 1992 presidential campaign tour in North Carolina. Bill Clinton and Al Gore, as well as their wives Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore, visited the campus of Elon College on October 26, 1992. The collection primarily contains photographs and newspaper clippings that portray and discuss the Clinton/Gore visit to Alamance County, NC, specifically Elon College. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into three series. The series are: Correspondence; Photographs; Printed Material. The only series arranged chronologically is Printed Material.

The correspondence series contains one letter discussing the arrival of Bill Clinton and Al Gore to Elon College on October 26, 1992. Gerald Francis (then Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs) sent a letter to all faculty, staff, and students letting them know that Clinton and Gore were stopping at Elon College in front of the Alamance Building during their presidential campaign tour in North Carolina (1:1).

The largest series in the collection contains photographs, slides, and negatives showing the crowds that came to see Clinton and Gore at Elon College, Clinton and Gore speaking to the crowd in front of the Alamance Building, and members of the Clinton/Gore bus caravan (news crews, security agents, etc…). Since this series only contains photographic materials, it offers no textual information regarding their visit to Elon College in 1992 (2:1-2:7).

One of the smaller series in the collection is printed material. This series contains only one folder of newspaper clippings taken from the
Burlington Times-News
and the
Greensboro News and Record
. The majority of the articles discuss events that took place in various cities/towns that the Clinton/Gore presidential campaign visited during their tour in North Carolina. However, there are a few articles that discuss specific events that took place during their visit at Elon College (3:1).

This is one of the smallest series in the collection, containing only one letter. The letter is dated October 23, 1992 and it is addressed to all faculty, staff, and students from Gerald Francis regarding the Clinton/Gore presidential tour coming to Elon College on October 26, 1992. Francis states that the bus tour will stop in front of the Alamance Building around 11 a.m. Of particular historical interest pertaining to Elon College, is Francis’s statement that “About one half hour prior to the caravan’s arrival, the Elon College community will be alerted by the town siren” (1:1).

The photographs represent the largest series in the collection. However, this series provides no textual information regarding the Clinton/Gore visit to Elon College. Primarily, the photographs, slides, and negatives are of Clinton and Gore standing in front of their bus/caravan speaking to the Elon Community and crowd (2:1-2:7). Other photographs, slides, and negatives show the vast number of people who crowded in front of the Alamance Building (2:1, 2:2). This series contains some close up shots of Bill Clinton and Al Gore, as well as their wives Hillary Clinton and Tipper Gore.

Along with the correspondence series, the printed material series is another small series in this collection. It contains newspaper articles pertaining to the Clinton/Gore tour across North Carolina, including some articles specifically about the stop at Elon College. All of the articles are either from the
Burlington Times-News
or the
Greensboro News and Record
(3:1). Since their visit to Elon College was prior to the 1992 presidential election, many of the articles discuss various topics and issues that Clinton and Gore were campaigning about, as well as events that took place in each city/town they visited in North Carolina (3:1).
