Scope and Content Note

This collection primarily contains Correspondence and Printed Materials that relate to WWII, Elon College during WWII, and the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity of Elon College. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into eight series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Correspondence; Financial Documents; Lists; Literary Productions; Maps; Photographs; Printed Material; Prints and Drawings. Specifically, much of the Correspondence was written to D.J. Bowden from former students at Elon College who were drafted (or chose) to serve in the military during WWII (1:1-1:54). The letters document the life, experiences, training, and other personal ideas/thoughts of the servicemen that served in the military during WWII. Furthermore, since D.J. Bowden was the faculty advisor for the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity at Elon College, many of the materials in this collection relate to the fraternity and its members (1:4, 1:6, 1:9, 1:15, 1:16, 1:18, 1:19, 2:1, 3:1, 3:2, 7:5, 7:7, 7:8-7:10).

Moreover, this collection contains a few Photographs (primarily black and white) of D.J. Bowden and other servicemen that served during WWII. Many of the pictures of the servicemen were taken on the campus of Elon College during the early 1940's (6:1, 6:2).

In addition, the Printed Material series includes wedding announcements and invitations that D.J. Bowden received from servicemen that had been writing to him during WWII. Also, there are Sigma Phi Beta newsletters in which Bowden took pieces of information from the letters he had received, and composed a comprehensive newsletter that was sent out to servicemen and "brothers" in the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity (7:1-7:15).

Arrangement

The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into eight series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Correspondence; Financial Documents; Lists; Literary Productions; Maps; Photographs; Printed Material; Prints and Drawings.

Detailed Description of the Collection

1. Correspondence. 1972-1993.
54 Folders. ca. 300 Items.
The Correspondence series is the largest one in this collection. Primarily, it is comprised of handwritten greeting cards and letters from men who were members of the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity at Elon College while they were serving in WWII. Many of the service men wrote to D.J. ("Doc") Bowden about their experiences during the war, family life, training, and any other personal thoughts. D.J. Bowden served as the faculty advisor for Sigma Phi Beta fraternity from 1935-1944, so he knew many of the men personally. In addition, D.J. Bowden would write back to the men and many of those letters are represented in this series. For specific excerpts from various letters, see the report written by Scott Evans (2001) for the Elon: Past, Present, & Future class taught by Dr. James Earl Danieley of Elon University (4:1).

2. Financial Documents. 1944-1947.
1 Folder. 1 Item.
One of the smallest series in the collection, Financial Documents, contains multiple pages that outline the deposits, withdrawals, and balances of the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity fund. Pieces of information that can be found within this document include dates, amounts, and names of individuals (2:1).
Folder 1. Notes. Sigma Phi Beta. 1944-1947.
3. Lists. 1943-1944.
2 Folders. 2 Items.
Within this series are complete Lists of the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity alumni members (3:1, 3:2). Each list includes the year the alumni graduated from Elon College, either the city they currently live in or where their hometown was located, and sometimes a street address is provided (3:1, 3:2).
Folder 1. Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity. 1943.
Folder 2. Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity. 1944.
4. Literary Productions. 2001.
1 Folder. 1 Item.
Another small series in this collection, Literary Productions, contains a report written by Scott Evans for the class Elon: Past, Present, & Future taught by Dr. James Earl Danieley of Elon College (4:1). The report highlights the purpose of the Correspondence in this collection, and also includes specific excerpts from multiple letters from the collection. Furthermore, Evans presents some basic biographical information about D.J. Bowden and what Elon College was like during WWII when many of the male students left school to fight in the war.

5. Maps. 1985.
1 Folder. 1 Item.
This series only contains one Map of the Indianola area in Washington state. It is hand drawn, highlighting only a handful of major roads and highways. It is a very basic map with not much detail of the area (5:1).
Folder 1. Indianola, Washington. 1985.
6. Photographs. 1940s.
2 Folders. ca. 16 Items.
The Photographs in this series are divided up into two different categories. One folder contains photographs primarily of D.J. Bowden when he was older (6:1). The other folder contains miscellaneous photographs, mostly of soldiers/servicemen during WWII. Many of the photographs are identified, but there are a few that are not. In particular, there are a few pictures that were taken on the campus of Elon College during the early 1940’s (6:2).

7. Printed Material. 1942-1944.
15 Folders. ca. 150 Items.
The Printed Material series contains a wide variety of items ranging from wedding announcements to newsletters. It is the second largest series, after the Correspondence series. There are a fair number of wedding announcements that relate to many of the servicemen that were in contact with D.J. Bowden during WWII (7:1-7:3). Some of the other announcements and invitations pertain to events sponsored by the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity of Elon College (7:1-7:6).
Of particular historical significance are the Sigma Phi Beta newsletters (7:8-7:10). D.J. Bowden took bits and pieces of information from each letter he received from various servicemen during WWII and composed a newsletter that was sent to other "brothers" of the Sigma Phi Beta fraternity. This was an excellent way to keep connections and ties strong among colleagues and "brothers" of the same fraternity.
Furthermore, this series has a small collection of postcards depicting multiple scenes and buildings on the campus of Elon College. All the postcards are blank, with no correspondences (7:14).
