Scope and Content Note

This collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into three series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Correspondence; Literary Productions; and Printed Material. Specifically, this collection offers a glimpse into the world of Elon College’s theatre, choir, and cultural programs during the 1950s. Furthermore, the collection represents a portion of the lives of John and Martha Vance while they attended Elon College in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

The Correspondence and Literary Production series are the smallest in the collection, containing only one item each. The Correspondence series contains a letter congratulating Reverend Guy Hartwell Veazy on the fiftieth anniversary of his Ordination into the Christian ministry (1:1). The Literary Productions series contains one booklet of a theatrical play entitled
Room Service
, performed at Elon College in the 1950s (2:1).

The largest series in this collection contains a variety of Printed Materials that include newspaper clippings, programs, and flyers. The programs represent both theatrical and Commencement events that took place at Elon College both in 1928 and 1949 (3:1, 3:7-3:9). The flyers in this series show colorful advertisements of Elon College football games during 1949 (3:2-3:4).

This series of Printed Material is by far the largest in the collection. It contains a variety of materials including programs, flyers, and newspaper clippings. The programs represent various theatre productions that took place at Elon College (performed by the theatre group, the Elon Players) during the 1950s. Specifically, the two plays that are represented in this series include
Champion of the West
and
Kind Lady
(3:7, 3:9). In addition, there is also a program for the musical concert performed by the Elon Singers choral group. Within this program there are black and white photographs of members of the Elon Singers (3:8). The other program in this series is a 1928 Elon College Commencement program (3:1).

Three items in the collection are flyers advertising Elon College Football games. All of the flyers are in color, and picture promotional graphics of the times during 1949 (3:2-3:4).

The newspaper clippings in this series contain a brief story of the Elon Choir members who toured the northern United States, performing in multiple cities (3:5). Also, there is a small excerpt from an unknown paper source that briefly mentions how John D. Vance, Jr. made his first appearance in an Elon College play entitled
What a Life
in 1948 (3:6).
