Abstract: This collection outlines the accomplishments, awards, and certificates that Dr. Wally Snyder has received over the years for his service and dedication to Elon University and underprivileged children in the state of North Carolina. About half of the collection contains plaques (artifacts) that disclose the awards Dr. Snyder has received and the other half of the collection is comprised of paper-based awards, certificates, and diplomas (all relating to Dr. Snyder). The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into two series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Artifacts and Printed Material. This collection is a good starting point for learning basic biographical information about Dr. Wally Snyder, as well as child care services and organizations both in North Carolina and the United States.

Biographical Note



Early Years and Education:
* Born in Elkton, VA in 1923
* In high school-Wally served as Conference President of the Pilgrim Fellowship
* Received an A.B. degree in Religion from Elon College in 1945
* While at Elon he was a part of the following clubs/organizations: Student Christian Association (SCA) (all 4 years), President of SCA (senior), Ministerial Association (all 4 years), Vice President of Ministerial Association (junior), Band (freshman), Dr. Johnson's Literary Society (sophomore-senior), Secretary of Literary society (senior), Maroon and Gold staff (junior), May Day escort (junior), Art club (senior), and a member of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.



Career in the Chruch:
* Ordained on November 26, 1943 at the Bethel Congregational Christian Church near Elkton, VA
* December 1944, Wally worked full time on his charge at the Mt. Zion, Bethel, and Concord churches in Virginia. He left these churches in March of 1952
* March 1, 1952-July 27, 1958-served as minister for the Beverly Hills Community Church in Burlington, NC
* September 1958-July 1960-served as minister for the Rosemont Congregational Christian Church in South Norfolk, VA
* Served as President of the North Carolina and Virginia Conference of the Southern Convention of Congregational Christian Churches
* Served as Secretary of the Eastern Virginia Conference



Career at the Elon Home for Children:
* August 1, 1960-Wally's first day as the Superintendent at the Elon Home for Children
* He facilitated the establishment of the following programs at the Home: group care, foster care, group home care, advanced care, community and family services, day care for preschool children with working parents, after school care for children K-3, and he added a social services department (previously, the Home only offered group care)
* During his tenure, 5 cottages were added-each housed 12-14 children
* In 1974, an activities building was added that had a gym, activity rooms for sewing, arts and crafts, a teenage room and lobby
* Also in 1974, the Turner Group Home opened in Suffolk, VA to serve children in VA
* In 1975, the John G. Truitt Administration Building opened-it housed social services and mail appeal office staff
* In 1975-Johnston Hall was renovated to house the preschool day care program downstairs and the "learning center" upstairs. Also housed upstairs were living facilities for house parents and the family and community service department
* Snyder retired from Elon Home for Children in 1990, as the Chief Executive Officer

* On May 4, 2006, the Snyder room in Johnston Hall was named and dedicated to Wally Snyder

* Wally married Nellie Gray Mann of Burlington, NC on May 28, 1944 at the 1st Presbyterian Church in Burlington
* Nell G. Mann's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Coy McKinley Mann of Burlington, NC
* Wally and Nell had three children: Coy Wesley, Elia Ann, and Rita Dale
* Coy Wesley was born on December 8, 1947 at Dr. McLamm's clinic in Mebane, NC
* Elia Ann was born July 27, 1952 at the Alamance County Hospital
* Rita Dale was born July 9, 1953 at the Alamance County Hospital
* Coy Wesley Snyder married Miss Rebecca Sue Love on April 30, 1972 in the 1st Baptist Church in Graham, NC
* Rebecca Sue Love's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Scott Love of Graham, NC
* Elia Ann Snyder married Larry Hardin Moser on February 14, 1976 at the Elon Community Church
* Larry Hardin Moser's parents were Mr. and Mrs. Roy Byrd of Burlington, NC
* Coy Wesley and Rebecca Sue had a daughter, Lori Ann Snyder, on April 15, 1973
* Wally and Nell have eight grandchildren: Lori Ann, Ryan, Neil, Emily, Julie, Morgan, Andrew, and Evan
* Nell Snyder passed away from a rare form of leukemia on April 15, 2002

The Artifact series contains plaques that outline awards that Dr. Snyder received over the years for his service and dedication at the Elon Home for Children, as well as his interest in the social welfare of underprivileged children in North Carolina.

The Printed Material series contains paper-based awards, certificates, and diplomas. Many of the awards and certificates are from both local and national organizations (primarily dealing with child care services) honoring and recognizing Dr. Snyder for his continued dedication to the children of North Carolina. The three diplomas in this series are all originals that Dr. Snyder received either from Elon College or Duke University.

Detailed Description of the Collection

The Artifact series contains plaques that represent awards that Dr. Wally Snyder received over the years. The majority of the awards relate to his service as the Superintendent of the Elon Home for Children and his dedication to the social welfare of children throughout the state of North Carolina. For example, there is an award in this series that honors Dr. Snyder for 25 years of service as Superintendent of the Elon Home for Children (1:1). Other examples of awards in this series include Dr. Snyder being recognized as an advocate for children (1:2), continuing to serve juveniles in the state of North Carolina (1:6), and empowering children across America to be law abiding citizens (1:8). Of particular interest to Elon University is the original plaque that was given to Dr. Snyder on May 2, 1981 that honored him as a distinguished alumnus (1:4).

There are three types of Printed Materials in this series: awards, certificates, and diplomas. The majority of awards presented to Dr. Snyder include recognition of his dedication and service to the Elon Home for Children, as well as child care in the Southeast and North Carolina (2:1-2:5).
Dr. Snyder was certified by numerous organizations, both locally and nationally over the years. For example, while Wally Snyder was attending Elon College in the mid-1940s, he received a certificate from Pi Gamma Mu (national social science honor society) stating that he had fulfilled all the requirements to be a part of this particular honor society (2:6). Also while Dr. Snyder was attending Elon, he was selected and for inclusion in the 1944-45 edition of the Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges (2:7). Some additional examples of places and organizations that certified Dr. Snyder include the United Church of Christ (2:8), the Burlington and National Association of Life Underwriters (2:10), Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, Inc. (2:11), Alamance County Chamber of Commerce (2:12), and the National Exchange Club (2:13). In 1970, Dr. Snyder attended a series of classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later received a certificate stating that he had completed the sequence of studies in Administration in Group Child Care (2:9).
There are three diplomas in this series, two of which relate directly to Elon College. Dr. Snyder’s original Elon College diploma is included in this series, stating that he graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion (2:14). The other diploma in this series that relates to Elon is his original Doctor of Divinity honorary degree that he received on May 25, 1964 (2:16). Also included in this series is Dr. Snyder’s original diploma from the Divinity School at Duke University stating that he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Divinity (2:15).
