The Artifact series contains plaques that represent awards that Dr. Wally Snyder received over the years. The majority of the awards relate to his service as the Superintendent of the Elon Home for Children and his dedication to the social welfare of children throughout the state of North Carolina. For example, there is an award in this series that honors Dr. Snyder for 25 years of service as Superintendent of the Elon Home for Children (1:1). Other examples of awards in this series include Dr. Snyder being recognized as an advocate for children (1:2), continuing to serve juveniles in the state of North Carolina (1:6), and empowering children across America to be law abiding citizens (1:8). Of particular interest to Elon University is the original plaque that was given to Dr. Snyder on May 2, 1981 that honored him as a distinguished alumnus (1:4).

There are three types of Printed Materials in this series: awards, certificates, and diplomas. The majority of awards presented to Dr. Snyder include recognition of his dedication and service to the Elon Home for Children, as well as child care in the Southeast and North Carolina (2:1-2:5).

Dr. Snyder was certified by numerous organizations, both locally and nationally over the years. For example, while Wally Snyder was attending Elon College in the mid-1940s, he received a certificate from Pi Gamma Mu (national social science honor society) stating that he had fulfilled all the requirements to be a part of this particular honor society (2:6). Also while Dr. Snyder was attending Elon, he was selected and for inclusion in the 1944-45 edition of the
Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges
(2:7). Some additional examples of places and organizations that certified Dr. Snyder include the United Church of Christ (2:8), the Burlington and National Association of Life Underwriters (2:10), Baptist Children’s Homes of North Carolina, Inc. (2:11), Alamance County Chamber of Commerce (2:12), and the National Exchange Club (2:13). In 1970, Dr. Snyder attended a series of classes at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and later received a certificate stating that he had completed the sequence of studies in Administration in Group Child Care (2:9).

There are three diplomas in this series, two of which relate directly to Elon College. Dr. Snyder’s original Elon College diploma is included in this series, stating that he graduated in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion (2:14). The other diploma in this series that relates to Elon is his original Doctor of Divinity honorary degree that he received on May 25, 1964 (2:16). Also included in this series is Dr. Snyder’s original diploma from the Divinity School at Duke University stating that he graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor’s of Divinity (2:15).
