Scope and Content Note

This collection relates specifically to the biography of Thad Eure, his accomplishments, and contributions to the Democratic political party in North Carolina and the Southern United States from the 1920’s to the early 1990’s. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into ten series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Artifacts; Books; Correspondence; Financial Documents; Legal Documents; Lists; Literary Productions; Photographs; Printed Material; Prints and Drawings.

Mr. Eure’s collection is an eclectic mix of materials that tell the story of the life and times of his existence in politics, memberships, organizations, and his influences on people, events and places. Within the Artifact series, there are two items in particular that represent Mr. Eure . These two Artifacts are his original red bow tie and straw hat. Mr. Eure would be seen wearing at least one of these two items on most occasions, and they became his trademark, as well as a way people knew Mr. Eure (1:1.1, 1:9).

The Books in this collection reflect the types of publications that were compiled by the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State and/or issued by Thad Eure (2:1-2:6). The Correspondence series is one that sheds light on the contributions, accomplishments, honors, and influences Mr. Eure had over the years. The main themes represented in the Correspondence series relate directly to the establishment of the Thad Eure Centennial Scholarship Fund at Elon College in 1988, the “Red Bow Tie Day” celebration in 1989 that honored Mr. Eure for serving as North Carolina’s Secretary of State, and to the passing of Mr. Eure in July of 1993 (3:13, 3:14, 3:16).

Both the Financial and Legal Documents series represent some of the smaller series in this collection. The Financial Documents series primarily contains photocopies of checks written by various individuals, contributing to either the Scholarship Fund or other events honoring Mr. Eure (4:1-4:5). As for the Legal Documents series, it contains one item of historical interest. This item is Thad Eure’s official discharge from the U.S. Military that was granted to him on February 24, 1919—after he served as a Private in the U.S. Army during World War I (5:1).

The Lists series contains Lists of various Elon College and North Carolina related organizations and events (6:1-6:17). Materials that outline Mr. Eure’s personal and professional life, as well as his contributions and accomplishments, can be found in the Literary Productions series. This series is comprised of essays written by various individuals that documented who Thad Eure was, as well as what his role was in relation to his family, politics in North Carolina, and serving on the Board of Trustees at Elon College (7:1-7:10).

Representing two of the largest series in the collection are the Photographs and Printed Materials. The Photographs series primarily contains black and white prints (with some color prints) that document events, places, and political connections in Mr. Eure’s life (8:1-8:38). The Printed Material series contains a wide variety of items. Some examples of the types of materials included are newspaper clippings, magazines, awards, certificates, newsletters, invitations, booklets, brochures, and programs. Almost all of the items in this series pertain directly to Thad Eure and his role in North Carolina politics, as well as his role with various organizations both locally and nationally. This is an excellent collection that documents the political environment in North Carolina and in the Southern United States during the 1920’s through the 1900’s.

Detailed Description of the Collection 1. Artifacts. Inclusive: 1920-1929. Bulk: 1921-23. 9 Folders. 20 Items.

Although this series is one of the smaller ones, it contains a variety of memorabilia. Of particular interest is the original straw hat and red bow tie that Thad Eure was known for wearing on most occasions (1:1.1, 1:9). Other items in this series include Thad Eure political promotional stickers, a briefcase, name plate, and smoking pipes that he used. In addition to the original red bow tie worn by Mr. Eure, there is also the replica of the original bow tie that was worn by guests who were invited to the “Red Bow Tie Day” celebration on January 6, 1989 that honored Mr. Eure’s career as being North Carolina’s Secretary of State for fifty three years (1:1).

The majority of the Books in this series have some relation to Thad Eure. The Books that Mr. Eure issued through the Department of the Secretary of State include about 4 titles (2:2, 2:3, 2:5, 2:6). Specifically, most of the Books that were issued by Mr. Eure pertain to North Carolina politics, political offices, and political statistics. In particular, the Book titled North Carolina Government 1585-1974: A narrative and statistical history is comprehensive and detailed record that presents North Carolina’s political history over that time period (2:2).

Another Book of interest is titled North Carolina as seen by the National Geographic Magazine, which contains both color and black and white photographs that document North Carolina and its history (2:4). Not only are there photographs, but there is quite a bit of text that accompanies the photos which leads the reader through time periods and events that took place in North Carolina history (2:4).

The Correspondence series is one of the larger series in the collection, containing mostly letters. There are a few important themes and/or events that are documented through these letters and will be explained below. The first major event that is documented is the establishment of the Thad Eure Centennial Scholarship Fund at Elon College in 1988 (3:12). The letters outline the initial planning stages to establish this fund, the requests of funds for support, and the press releases after the establishment (3:12). Not only do some letters document what Elon College’s correspondences to possible donors to the fund were, but also includes letters of return from individuals stating whether or not they would be able to contribute to the scholarship fund and their reasons (3:12).

The next major event that is outlined in this series is the creation of the “Red Bow Tie Day” celebration in January of 1989 that honored Mr. Eure and his service as North Carolina’s Secretary of State for fifty three years (3:13). Similar to the establishment of the Scholarship Fund mentioned above, these letters record the initial planning process, steps taken to recruit and invite guests to attend the celebration, expectations of the event, and the aftermath (3:13). There is quite a bit of Correspondence between Elon College and various political offices in North Carolina regarding the “Red Bow Tie Day” celebration on January 6, 1989 (3:13).

In addition to the majority of letters that document the events explained above, several letters record when and what type of awards Mr. Eure received by various organizations (3:4, 3:5, 3:7, 3:9, 3:14). Also of particular interest is a letter from the Governor at the time, James B. Hunt, Jr. declaring November 22, 1982 to be “Thad Eure Day” (3:6). The letters dealing with the establishment of the Thad Eure Chair of Political Science Endowment at Elon College in 1986 not only documents this endowment fund, but the Correspondences also outline notable events during the history of the College (3:10). Additionally, there are quite a few Correspondences that discuss Mr. Eure’s decisions and the outcomes of campaigning and being re-elected as North Carolina’s Secretary of State (3:11).

Furthermore, this series contains Correspondences that pertain to the passing of Mr. Eure in July of 1993 (3:16). These Correspondences range from the initial announcements of his passing, to planning ceremonies that honored Mr. Eure, and reactions from his family members, as well as local communities (3:16).

The majority of the Financial Documents that make up this series are photocopies of checks that were written to support events honoring Thad Eure and the Scholarship Fund (4:1, 4:2, 4:3). Of particular interest is a check that was written by Mr. Eure’s daughter, Armecia Eure Black, for the amount of $10,000 to be added to the Scholarship Fund (4:4).

After Mr. Eure’s passing in July of 1993, members from the local community and Elon College decided to have a “Tree Planting Ceremony” on the grounds of the State Capitol in Raleigh, NC in November. During the ceremony, an oak tree was planted as a permanent symbol of Thad Eure’s accomplishments, his service, and his dedication to Elon College by serving on the Board of Trustees. The original purchase order for the oak tree that was planted at the State Capitol is included in this series (4:5).

This is the smallest series in the collection, containing only military records of Thad Eure (5:1). The most important document in this series is the official military discharge record of Mr. Eure. Mr. Eure served in the U.S. Army as a private during World War I, from 1918-1919. Mr. Eure was officially discharged from the U.S. Military on February 24, 1919 (5:1). This document not only mentions his affiliation with the U.S. Military, but it also offers details concerning Mr. Eure’s physical features (5:1).

Mixed in with the contributing names to the Scholarship Fund is a List of the Elon College Board of Trustees for June of 1988 (6:4).

The majority of Literary Productions in this series are essays and reminiscences about Thad Eure, as well as speeches given at different events that honored Mr. Eure. The earliest reminiscence (1981) provides a nice overview of Mr. Eure’s career in politics, as well as non-political services and memberships (7:4). Most of the other documents in this series are essays written by various individuals which were presented at events honoring Mr. Eure. Some examples of these events include Mr. Eure receiving the Citizen’s Distinguished Service Award from Elon College, his tenure as a member of the Elon College Board of Trustees, recognizing the establishment of the Scholarship Fund, honoring him at the “Red Bow Tie Day” celebration in 1989, and of his passing in 1993 (7:3, 7:5, 7:8, 7:9, 7:6, 7:10).

The Printed Material series by far is the largest in the collection, containing a wide variety of materials. Some examples of types of materials included in this series are newspaper clippings, magazines, awards, newsletters, invitations, booklets, brochures, and programs. Almost all of the materials in this series pertain directly to Thad Eure and his role in North Carolina politics, as well as his role with various organizations both locally and nationally.

One of the most useful brochures in this series pertains to the Thad Eure Centennial Scholarship Fund at Elon College. Not only are there paragraphs outlining all the accomplishments of Mr. Eure, but there are also photographs that help tell the story of Mr. Eure’s life and milestones. Many of the original photographs shown in this brochure are housed in this collection (9:8). This series also contains examples of political flyers that Mr. Eure’s office distributed while he was seeking election to the Office of the Secretary of State in North Carolina.

In this series there are many magazines that document Eure’s life, his contributions, and his accomplishments. Some examples of magazines that have highlighted Mr. Eure include The Elon Alumni News, the North Carolina magazine, The Magazine of Elon, The State, Carolina Piedmont, and North Carolina Trooper (9:18, 9:20, 9:21, 9:22, 9:23). The stories in each of these magazines range in topics from Mr. Eure’s contributions to Elon College, his role in politics in North Carolina, and his family background and upbringing.

The newspaper clippings cover in detail the personal and professional life of Thad Eure (9:33-9:54). The best way to get an idea of what topics are covered in many of the newspaper clippings is to refer to the folder lists below that contain the title "Newspaper Clippings."

Of particular historical interest in this series is a transcript from an oral history interview conducted in 1974, when Casey Jones of UNC Chapel Hill interviewed Mr. Eure (9:68). The transcript is 61 pages long and sheds light on Mr. Eure’s personal and professional life. This transcript allows researchers to experience how Mr. Eure expressed himself and hear his story in his own words (9:68).

Prints and Drawings is another small series in this collection, containing three different drawings of Thad Eure. There is a date of 1987 on one of them, but the other two are undated. Additionally, in all of the drawings Mr. Eure is wearing his famous red bow tie, but in only one of the prints is Mr. Eure holding his famous straw hat (10:1).
