Scope and Content Note

This small but historically rich collection primarily contains Correspondence from Angie Henry Utt to her family, in which she discusses in detail daily life and activities at Elon College during the late 1930s and early 1940s (after the Great Depression and the beginnings of World War II). The items in this collection that are not Correspondence either assist with offering more historical context to many of the letters, or document Angie and Kenneth Utt visually through photographs. The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into five series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Audio Recordings; Correspondence; Financial Documents; Photographs; Printed Material.

In addition to the Correspondence in this collection, there are four cassette tapes of audio recordings that document life at Elon from 1938 to 1942 (based on the information written on the exterior of the tapes). The content on three of the four tapes is unknown because they have not been listened to as of December 2006 (1:1-1:3). However, one tape that is titled "Series of letters to family in Portsmouth, VA" is a recording of Angie Utt reading letters that she wrote to her family (some of the letters may be included in the collection).

The Financial Documents and Printed Material series are the smallest in the collection, offering a wide variety of materials directly relating to either Elon College or Angie Henry Utt. The two items within the Financial Documents series are receipts that itemize the "cost of living" at Elon College in 1938 and 1939 (3:1, 3:1.1). Within the Printed Material series, there are various papers that offer biographical information about both Angie and Kenneth Utt, as well as their financial contributions to Elon College over the years (5:1, 5:2).

The Correspondence series is the largest in the collection, containing letters from Angie Utt to her family while she attended Elon College during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Throughout almost all of Angie's letters back home, there are certain details she writes about frequently such as finances, dances, cost of school, Greek life, classes, sporting events, fashion needs, dating, weather, sicknesses, May Day celebrations, and various other topics concerning daily life and activities at Elon.

Within the numerous letters in this series, there are a few of particular interest. For example, on January 19, 1942, Angie writes about the events surrounding a fire on Elon's campus that had occurred only two days earlier (2:7). The north wing of West Dormitory caught fire, starting in the kitchen, on January 17, 1942 (2:7). In this detailed letter, Angie talks about how people worked together to get everyone out of the building safely and the miscellaneous items they grabbed on their way out (2:7). Not only does she mention the details concerning the sequence of events, but she also discusses people's emotional reactions, as well as the College's reaction to the disaster and the cost of repair (2:7).

Angie's interest in Kenneth Utt can be traced through a series of letters that she wrote home in 1941 (2:5, 2:6). In these letters, she talks about how Kenneth was in the same social network, and how they began to “hang out” with one another more frequently. While at Elon, they had similar interests and were involved in some of the same clubs, such as the Dramatics Club. Both of them were featured in the play production of Shakespeare's
Othello
, in which Angie played Desdemona and Kenneth played Othello (5:2). Specifically, the seriousness of their relationship/friendship took a turn in December of 1941 when Kenneth asked Angie to marry him (2:6). At first, Angie responded by laughing and saying, “In the next ten years,” but when he got serious and asked again, Angie realized it was true (2:6). Angie and Kenneth were married a few years later in 1943, though there is no evidence of this in the Correspondence series (5:2).

Another small series in this collection contains two Financial Documents, both receipts from Elon College. On each of the receipts, there is a list of fees and charges in relation to the “cost of living” at Elon during the late 1930s. Some examples of the charges and fees listed include registration fees, laboratory fees, tuition, room rent, board, room reservation, etc. (3:1, 3:1.1). These two receipts are excellent primary sources that document the costs of attending Elon during the late 1930s.

The Photographs series is the second largest series in the collection, next to the Correspondence series. Within this series, there are mainly black and white prints, with a few color prints included. Most of the photographs contain either Angie or Kenneth Utt in them, sometimes pictured together (4:1-4:4). Of particular interest is a color photograph of Angie and Kenneth Utt standing with the actress Jodie Foster at the 1992 Academy Awards (4:4). During this award ceremony, Kenneth Utt received his first and only Oscar for Best Picture for the major motion picture,
The Silence of the Lambs
(4:4).

The Printed Material series is another small series in the collection, but it contains helpful biographical information about both Angie and Kenneth Utt. For example, a brief outline about Angie Utt can be found in this series which includes biographical, Elon connections, business, and financial pieces of information (5:1). In addition to this outline, a paper titled "Prospect Contact Detail" was generated by Alumni Affairs, Institutional Advancement, or Gift Planning at Elon—giving details to the amount of money Mrs. Utt gave to Elon College over a period of time (5:2). Furthermore, there is another brief outline that discusses Mrs. Utt's past giving and her potential to be a major donor to Elon in the future (5:2).
