Biographical Note

Biographical information related to William N. Hilliard is limited both within the collection and external resources. However, from this manuscript collection a small amount of information was gathered. Mr. Hilliard served in the House of the Student Government Association (Seat 41) while he attended Elon from 1938 to 1941 (1:1). He was a member of the cheerleading squad in 1940 (5:5). Other memberships he held included the Y.M.C.A. in 1939-1940, the Student Christian Association, and Dr. Johnson's Literary Society, for which he served as Vice President in 1940 (6:1, 6:6, 6:17).

Other biographical information about Mr. Hilliard was obtained from a personal email he sent to Katie Nash on April 19, 2007 and from an excerpt in the
Christian Sun
newspaper, January 28, 1943, pg. 7. During the summer of 1941, Mr. Hilliard was drafted to serve active duty for the Naval Reserve. He was unable to finish his education at Elon. For about a year after he left Elon, he served in the Navy at the Panama Canal Zone. During October 1942, he was selected for officer's training school and was stationed in New York. In 1943, he trained at the Midshipman's School in New York and graduated as an Ensign. He was released from the Navy in July of 1946 when he got a job as news editor with WPTF radio in Raleigh, NC. Mr. Hilliard received his degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. He is originally from Cary, NC, and his father was a leader in a local Christian Church.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is arranged alphabetically by type of material into six series, then chronologically within each series, where applicable. The series are: Artifacts; Correspondence; Literary Productions; Maps; Photographs; Printed Material. Many of the materials relate to life at Elon College during the late 1930s and early 1940s-specifically for William N. Hilliard. The focal points of this collection pertain to music and theatrical events, athletics and cheerleading, literary societies, and May Day celebrations at Elon.

The smaller series in the collection include Artifacts, Correspondence, Literary Productions, and Maps. Most of the items in these series pertain to Elon, but many have little to no historical research value.

The two larger series, Photographs and Printed Material, offer a wide variety of materials and information relating to Elon's music and theatrical events, as well as literary societies, May Day celebrations, and athletic events.

Primarily, it contains photocopies of pages from another publication that contained printed photos-most of the photos in this series are not originals (5:1-5:4, 5:6, 5:8-5:9). However, there are a few original photographs that include cheerleaders at Elon and former president Leon Edgar Smith, both from 1940 (5:5, 5:7). William Hilliard was a male cheerleader, and is pictured in both of the cheerleading photos (5:5).

This is the largest series in the collection, containing a variety of Printed Materials and publications. Many of the items within this series are pages directly from the scrapbook that Mr. Hilliard kept while attending Elon College. On these pages, one can find items ranging from ticket stubs to report cards and Dean's permits, as well as membership cards, and so forth. Of particular historical interest to Elon are multiple programs from the late 1930s and early 1940s that document music and theatrical events by the Elon College Players, Elon Singers, Elon Festival Chorus, etc. (6:15-6:17). Also included are programs from Dr. Johnson's Literary Society, May Day celebrations, an open house for the Department of Physics, and Founder's Day events (6:15-6:17). Moreover, this series contains unique athletic schedules for football, baseball, and basketball at Elon (6:21-6:23). Railway ticket stubs from the Southern Railway and the Pennsylvania Greyhound Lines are included in this series (6:25, 6:28). This is the best series to refer to if one is attempting to get a general sense of what college life was like during the late 1930s and early 1940s-specifically for William N. Hilliard.
