Dr. Donald P. Flick compiled the contents of this collection during his research for a book on the history of the UCC churches and institutions of the Western North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference. This book,
Churches Related
, was co-authored by Dr. Flick and Dr. Thomas R. Hamilton and was published in 2008. The most common forms of material in this collection are survey questionnaires and photographs. Completed questionnaires in this collection returned by churches and institutions provide valuable historical facts and statistics since 1965. Other forms of material found here include books and essays of church/institutional history, informational brochures, programs from worship services, membership directories, newspaper clippings, and newsletters. Finally, the collection includes a draft copy of
Churches Related
with notes for the publisher. The bulk of the material in this collection dates from 2000 to 2008, though some older material (largely newspaper clippings) date back as far as 1955.
Scope and Content Note

Dr.

Churches Related
records the history of the last forty years (1965-2005) of the Evangelical and Reformed churches and institutions of the former Southern Synod, the former Congregational Christian churches which are now a part of the Western North Carolina Association, and churches that are new to the Association within the last forty years. This project was commissioned by the Evangelical and Reformed Historical Society of the Southern Conference and supported by the Western North Carolina Association. Previously, Rev. Banks J. Peeler had authored a history of the Southern Synod,
A Story of the Southern Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church
, which was published in 1968. Since that time, the Southern Synod had become a part of the Southern Conference of the UCC. Though this project did not want to duplicate Rev. Peeler's work,
Churches Related
was meant to be a standalone work, not a continuation of or companion to the 1968 publication. Therefore,
Churches Related
provides a brief but comprehensive historical sketch for each church and institution, with an emphasis on events and ministry since 1965.

A central component of Dr. Flick's methodology for this research was the questionnaires sent to local churches and the educational or benevolent institutions within the bounds of the Western North Carolina Association. Completed questionnaires in this collection returned by churches provide valuable facts and statistics regarding leadership, membership, and budget since 1965. The forms also asked churches about significant events, mission projects, and building programs their congregation had undertaken in that time. Questionnaires for educational and benevolent institutions contained slightly different questions and were returned at a lower rate; these forms asked for the institution's mission, leadership history, and significant accomplishments since 1965.

The most common form of material in this collection is photographs. Most photographs were taken in 2000 by Jack Leonard or Dr. Flick as a part of the research for
Churches Related
. Occasionally additional photographs were submitted by individual churches and institutions.

Other forms of material to be found in this collection include books and essays of church/institutional history, informational brochures, programs from worship services, membership directories, newspaper clippings, and newsletters. Some of this material was submitted by churches or institutions as a supplement to the history provided in the questionnaire; other material was collected in place of an unreturned questionnaire.

The amount of material covering each individual church or institution varies. Some submitted extensive amounts of additional material along with the questionnaire; others simply returned the questionnaire alone. Many churches failed to return the questionnaire and have only a photograph representing them in this collection.

The bulk of the material in this collection dates from 2000 to 2008, though some older material (largely newspaper clippings) date back as far as 1955. Geographically, the material documents churches and institutions within the bounds of the Western North Carolina Association. With the exception of two churches in southwestern Virginia close to the state line, all churches and institutions found within this collection are located in the western half of North Carolina.

The research files are arranged here in Dr. Flick's original order. Material is first divided into three series according to the type of institution. Series 1 contains information collected from Churches that are part of the Western North Carolina Association. Series 2, Organizations, documents benevolent institutions and ministries of the UCC that are physically located within the Western North Carolina Association, while Series 3, Educational Institutions, documents institutions of higher education historically linked to the UCC that fall within those same geographical boundaries. These series are then organized alphabetically by location and subsequently by name, as Dr. Flick's files were originally arranged.

The fourth and final series, Manuscript, represents the product of this research. It contains a draft copy of
Churches Related
with notes for the publisher. A copy of the book as published is not a part of this collection, but can be found in the Belk Archives Church History Collection at Elon University using the online library catalog.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into four series. The first three series (Churches; Organizations; Educational Institutions) are arranged alphabetically by location, then by the name of the institution, then by type of material. North Carolina locations are filed before Virginia locations. The fourth series (Manuscript) is arranged alphabetically by type of material.

By far the largest in this collection, this series contains information gathered by Dr. Flick for his research on churches of the Western North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ. In total, 113 churches are represented in this series, most in western North Carolina but also including two just over the state line in southwestern Virginia.

Photographs are the most common form of material found in this series, with at least one for almost every church in the collection. Most photographs were taken in 2000 by Jack Leonard or Dr. Flick as a part of this research, though individual churches occasionally submitted additional photographs that are also included here.

Dr. Flick sent short questionnaires to churches seeking an update on information provided in the 1968 publication of
A Story of the Southern Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church
. Surveys completed and returned by churches are the second most common form of material in this series, after photographs. Information in these questionnaires includes church location and name changes, names and terms of ministers, membership and budget statistics, and a brief history of major events, mission projects, and building programs in the church since 1965.

Other forms of material to be found in this series include books or essays of church history, informational brochures, programs from worship services, membership directories, and newspaper clippings. Some of this material was submitted by churches as a supplement to the history provided in the questionnaire; other material was collected in place of the questionnaire.

The breadth and depth of information found here varies from church to church. For many churches, a photograph was the only material present in Dr. Flick's files. On the other hand, approximately half of the churches in this series returned a questionnaire. Non-photographic material is available for approximately 67 churches.

This series contains research and information regarding six different benevolent organizations and ministries located within the Western North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference. As in the first series, breadth and depth of coverage varies across institutions. Benevolent institutions included in this series are the Black Lake Retreat Center, Blowing Rock Conference Center, Johns River Valley Camp, Elon Homes for Children, United Church Homes and Services, and Nazareth Children's Home. Only two organizations have a returned questionnaire included in these files, but a number of essays, booklets, brochures, and other materials serve to document the history and mission of these institutions instead.

This series includes information on two North Carolina institutions of higher education historically linked to the United Church of Christ: Elon University and Catawba College. Material on Elon includes a timeline and mission statement from the school's website (3:1) as well as an essay on its history adapted from Durward T. Stokes's
Elon College: Its History and Traditions
(3:2). Material on Catawba is more plentiful. In addition to brochures and handouts with general information (3:5-6) and a book about the college's history (3:4), this series includes photographs (3:7), a completed questionnaire (3:8), and earlier chapter drafts (3:6) from Dr. Flick's research on Catawba College.

A manuscript of the product of this research,
Churches Related
by Dr. Donald P. Flick and Dr. Thomas R. Hamilton (4:2), is located within this series.
Churches Related
documents the history of churches and institutions under the Western North Carolina Association of the Southern Conference of the United Church of Christ, with emphasis on the period from 1965 to 2005. Handwritten revisions and notes to the publisher are made within the text, and instructions regarding layout and photographic material are included at the front of the binder.

Also included in this series is a free-standing essay, "Roots of the Christian Church" (4:1), which was apparently considered for inclusion into the manuscript, but did not appear in its exact form in the final product.

A copy of
Churches Related
as published is not a part of this collection, but can be found in the Belk Archives Church History Collection at Elon University using the online library catalog.
