<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Robert Sigmon was a pioneer on the forefront of experiential learning and experiential service. The majority of his manuscript collection reflects the decades of the 1970s through the 1990s in this field. His teachings, research, and development through workshops, discussions and classes provide insight into the field as it progresses away from rote or didactic learning.  This type of learning is beneficial for self-directed students who take the initiative to acquire, apply and create the knowledge and skills needed to build character and community into creating a meaningful social change. In essence, experiential learning means taking the participant out of the classroom and into the world of reality.</p>
<p><title render="italic">The information below was written by Robert Sigmon. </title></p>
<p>Robert Sigmon was born in Lincoln County, NC, grew up in Charlotte, NC, graduated from Harding High School, and received a B.A. degree from Duke University in 1957.</p>
<p>Following college, he served in West Pakistan as a lay missionary with the Methodist Church where he managed a hostel for 130 boys.  Bob oversaw the care, feeding, study halls of the non-classroom life of these youngsters (ages 11-16) who came from the lowest caste families in the Punjab region of Pakistan.</p>
<p>After three years in Pakistan, he studied for nine months at United Theological College in Bangalore, in southern India.   Bob completed a Master of Divinity degree in 1964 at Union Theological Seminary, holding a two year field assignment as convener of a young adult ministry project at The Riverside Church in New York.  During the Civil Rights era (1964-66) Bob and his wife, Marian, co-directed a Quaker Peace Corps type program in the southeast with the American Friends Service Committee.</p>
<p>Given his work in Pakistan, New York and with economically and racially oppressed communities in the southeast, he became intrigued with the kinds of learning that occur when young people and adults engage in direct service activities with oppressed and marginalized people.   So for the next 40 years he worked in positions centered on promoting public service based experiential learning, primarily in the southeastern USA. Through the Southern Regional Council (1966-1970) he promoted service based experiential learning throughout the southeast.  He helped create in 1969 the North Carolina Internship Office (NCIO), a joint project of the Governor's Office and the Board of Higher Education (later became the consolidated UNC system) which promoted service based experiential learning throughout the state. From 1970-75 he directed the NCIO.  During this time, he was part of a group that formed what is now the National Society for Experiential Education.   He designed and managed a student initiated community based practicum for the new School of Public Health at the University of South Carolina (1975-78) and managed clinical training and continuing education programs for health care practitioners from 1978-91 in Raleigh, NC. Since 1991 he has consulted with national, state, and local programs supporting community-based public service based experiential learning.  In the early 1990s he designed and presented workshops promoting servant-leadership through the Robert K. Greenleaf Center.  For ten years he served as Senior Associate with the Engaged Community and Campus initiative of the Council of Independent Colleges in Washington, D.C.</p>
<p>The Sigmon's moved to a small farm in Western North Carolina in 1999, although Marian continued to work from her home for the N.C. Division of Aging until 2001 and Bob continued his consulting business until 2005.  He now aspires to become a competent gardener, beekeeper, woodworker and handyman.  The family (his daughters and their families share the farm space) reside on a small farm in the Riceville community of northeastern Buncombe County.</p>

<head>Scope and Content Note</head>
<p>This collection focuses on the subject of service-learning and its development as an educational tool for higher learning from 1962 to 2006. The first three boxes contain periodicals and newsletters. The two main titles are <title render="italic">Experiential Education</title> and <title render="italic">Synergist</title>. The fourth box has a list of 72 books about service-learning and is associated with the collection. The other files in these boxes contain published articles and publications found in resources such as the <title render="italic">American Journal of Education</title> and <title render="italic">The Chronicle of Higher Education</title>.</p>
<p>Boxes five through nine comprise the rest of the collection covering the many workshops, conferences, speeches, and educational functions which Sigmon and others gave and/or attended. Also included are research notes, teaching aids, and other documents related to service-learning and experiential education. For specific information about the contents in each box, please refer to the Detailed Description of the Collection (Series Note) and the Container List below.</p>

<p>This box begins the chronological file for all remaining materials in this collection. Included are folders for correspondences; essays; reports; notes from meetings and research; as well as teaching aids and other associated documents. The undated materials contain information on the service-learning programs with internship policies and procedures, as well as documents on community partnerships. As with the whole of the collection, there is an underlying goal of educating and developing both the student and the public for self-directed learning processes to occur in order to aid all of humanity, both those assisting and those assisted.</p>
<p>Some of the materials include proposals and developments of educational institutes that foster internship programs through the Southern Regional Education Board (5:33-39). The Atlanta Service-Learning Conference was held in 1969, the first conference of its kind (5:45-46, 5:48). The interest in making educational facilities in North Carolina the first to have the vision to broaden curriculum which would include service-learning, began in the early 1970’s (5:56-73).</p>

<p>The 1970’s were a busy time for experiential and service-learning initiatives. The whole wheel of service-learning was emerging from goal setting to experimenting and reviewing and finally doing, all dependent on the learner. The SFEE (The Society for Field Experience Education) held its founding conference in 1972 (6:4). The Southern Regional Education Board gives its report on student learning through community involvement during the same year (6:5). The need, use, and evaluation of internships in the community are highlighted through various documents in this box (6:6-7, 6:12-13, 6:17-18). Proposals and reports are sprinkled throughout the box as well (6:24-25, 6:35-36). Sigmon’s teachings in public health are also found in this box (6:36-39, 6:54-57, 6:70).</p>

<p>During the 1980’s Sigmon continued his up-hill climb of promoting the field of service and learning. He was still part of the public health community and produced many articles for the Wake County Medical Center, as well as did research for them (7:4, 7:15-17, 7:48). His many notes both for class and research appear throughout the collection, producing many forms and guidelines to aid the student in their learning experiences (7:10, 7:20, 7:73, 7:25, 7:39, 7:46). Many case studies and student experiences are reported on (7:51, 7:57-59) both in class and at conferences. In 1991 the NSIEE (National Society for Internships and Experiential Education) held its 20th anniversary celebration, as shown in folders 7:61-62.</p>

<p>The collection continues with the same subjects being highlighted: service-learning, internships, community involvement, and experiential education. In 1995, the CIC (Council of Independent Colleges) Consortia started a program called “Serving to Learn, Learning to Serve In Promoting School Success”, which involved ten schools in higher education that served elementary schools of the community.  This resulted in much correspondence, reporting, and evaluations of the success of the program (8:1-2, 8:4-8, 8:45).  A network of institutes of higher learning interested in promoting experiential learning followed and became more encompassing in the 1990’s (8:15-17, 8:20-21). When the internet became dominant in the 1990’s, survey reports and the like came through that mode (8:28-29, 8:40-41). Materials from a 1997 conference for Episcopalian church-based institutes of higher education that involved service-learning is included (8:30, 8:32.5-33.5).</p>

<p>This box continues with more evaluation of the CIC program (9:1-6) and surveys for the college student to assess their newly acquired skills and outlooks (9:8-10). The NSEE also started a community partnership development in the 1990’s, with Sigmon as a consultant. In 1999 the society came out with a report of the lessons learned from this collaboration (9:14). As with the entire collection, this box is filled with essays and notes on experiential learning, the teaching and evaluating of service-learning initiatives (9:15, 9:17, 9:19-20). More email correspondence containing results of experiences and the feelings developed are also included (9:13, 9:21). Documents from a 2000 program on service and social change at California State University, Monterey Bay, is included (9:24). In 2003-2004 there are files documenting results from partnerships between interested students and their communities (9:45). The entire collection is proof that Sigmon succeeded in starting and promoting (especially in North Carolina) the concept of service-learning and partnerships with those in need of aid to the betterment of all concerned.</p>
