Music theatre alumni to appear at the 2017 Tony Awards 

Seven Elon music theatre alumni perform in live productions nominated at the 71st Tony Awards, airing live on Sunday, June 11, at 8 p.m. on CBS.

‚ÄčElon University is celebrating alumni of its music theatre program who are performing in productions nominated for the 71st Tony Awards, which will air live at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 11.

Music theatre alumni Kennedy Caughell ’12 and Ashley Perez Flanagan ’10 are currently making their Broadway debuts performing alongside Josh Groban in “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” at the Imperial Theatre. The musical adaptation of Tolstoy's legendary 19th century Russian novel "War and Peace" is leading the pack with 12 Tony nominations, including Best Musical. It has also been nominated for four Drama Desk Awards, two Drama League Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, and a Chita Rivera Award. Caughell has recently toured the country as the standby for Elphaba in “Wicked” and as Heather in “American Idiot.”

Alumnus Taylor Trensch is currently playing the role of Barnaby Tucker in “Hello, Dolly!” starring Bette Midler at the Shubert Theatre. The critically acclaimed Broadway revival has garnered a total of 10 Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, as well as nominations for 10 Drama Desk Awards, two Drama League Awards, 10 Outer Critics Circle Awards, and two Chita Rivera Awards. Trensch has recently played the roles of Christopher in the Tony Award winning play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” Michael Wormwood in the Broadway musical “Matilda,” and Boq in the long-running “Wicked.”

Alumnus Johnny Stellard ’10 is performing at the Broadhurst Theatre in the ensemble of the long-anticipated Broadway production of “Anastasia,” in which he also serves as dance captain. The production has been nominated for two Tony Awards, nine Drama Desk Awards, two Drama League Awards, 13 Outer Critics Circle Awards, and a Chita Rivera Award. Stellard has previously appeared on the Great White Way in the Broadway revival of “Evita.”

Alumnus Paul Heesang Miller ’10 is appearing in the ensemble of the current Broadway revival of “Miss Saigon,” which has received two Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical. Playing at the Broadway Theatre, the dynamic production has also been nominated for a Drama Desk Award, two Drama League Awards, and an Outer Critics Circle Award. Miller has also been seen on Broadway in “Mamma Mia” and the Lincoln Center revival of “The King and I.” 

Music theatre alumni Matt Meigs ’12 and Drew Redington performed in the ensemble of Roundabout Theatre Company’s “Holiday Inn” at Studio 54 this year. The song-and-dance spectacular featuring music and lyrics by Irving Berlin was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Choreography as well as a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Choreography. Meigs has previously appeared on Broadway in “Matilda” and “Tuck Everlasting,” a musical composed by Elon alum Chris Miller ’99.
