Elon ranks as second-safest city in North Carolina
The annual rankings by the website SafeWise take into account data from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting system.
Using crime data from the FBI, the website SafeWise has ranked the Town of Elon as the second-safety city in North Carolina due to its low rate of violent crime.
The website regularly reports on personal, auto and home safety, and annually ranks the safest cities in each state and nationally using data from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting system.
According to the rankings, Elon had 0.3 violent crimes reported in 2016 for every 1,000 people, second only to Holly Springs, which had 0.27 violent crimes for every 1,000 people. Elon also had among the lowest property crime rates of those highlighted in the rankings.
"Violent crimes such as murder and robbery tend to make headlines, but property crime is another important indicator of a city’s safety," the report noted. "We’re happy to report that none of North Carolina’s twenty safest cities cited more than twenty-five property crimes per 1,000 people, and some cities (such as second-ranked Elon and third-ranked Pinehurst) reported remarkably fewer.
