David Copeland, Harlen Makemson present at history conference

Two School of Communications faculty members were featured panelists at the American Journalism Historians Association convention Oct. 8-11 in Birmingham. Ala.

David Copeland, A.J. Fletcher Professor, spoke on "Copyright, Contracts, and Other Legal Issues for Media Historians," drawing from his experience as an author of multiple books and as an editor for two large projects: an eight-book anthology of war reporting and the Peter Lang Publishing book series Mediating American History.

Associate Professor Harlen Makemson was a panelist for "Refocusing the Eye: New Research and Perspectives on CBS News." Makemson's book Media, NASA, and America's Quest for the Moon, published this summer as part of the Copeland series for Peter Lang, addresses how the battle for network evening news supremacy in the 1960s spilled over into coverage of the space program.

Founded in 1981, AJHA exists to foster research and teaching of journalism history. Copeland is past president of the organization.
