Periclean Scholars gather to celebrate accomplishments
A crowd of about 100 students and faculty gathered Oct. 6 for a celebration of the past and current accomplishments of Periclean Scholars, a program at Elon committed to raising the university community's level of civic engagement and social responsibility.
Through global partnerships, each class of Periclean Scholars creates projects and goals relating to its country of focus and works on these from sophomore year through graduation. The “Celebrating Periclean Scholars” event united and educated current Periclean Scholars classes and mentors on the current standing and future plans of each cohort.
Among the speakers was Elon University President Leo M. Lambert, Project Pericles director Tom Arcaro, Periclean Scholars alumna Lauren Durr ‘07 and representatives from each of the current Periclean Scholars classes, which have partnerships with Sri Lanka, India, Mexico, Ghana, and—as the first domestic partnership through Periclean Scholars—Appalachia, the area of focus for the upcoming Class of 2014.
The Periclean Scholars program at Elon is nationally recognized as being unique for its kind and is a part the national Project Pericles initiative.
