Elon Academy recognizes LabCorp
LabCorp, the largest private employer in Alamance County and a pioneer in genomic testing and the commercialization of new diagnostic technologies, was recognized with a plaque last month from the Elon Academy for the company's support of Elon University's academic enrichment and college access program over the past five years.
The Burlington-based company, one of the world's largest clinical laboratories, has provided Elon Academy scholars with paid internships for the past three years and has contributed to the Academy’s endowment fund to ensure the sustainability of the program.
Since the internship program’s inception, 41 Elon Academy students have interned in various LabCorp departments, including legal, public affairs, human resources, billing and information technology. Corporate and campus leaders hope that the students, by taking part in the internship program, have learned social and professional skills that will assist them in pursuing their career goals.
The Elon Academy is a college access and success program for academically promising Alamance County students who are the first in their families to attend college and/or who demonstrate a financial need. The students are selected for the Academy during their freshman year in high school and spend the next three years engaging in academic and enrichment activities on Elon’s campus and in the community. Students and families continue to receive support throughout their college years.
