Gerald Knight named editor-in-chief of education Journal; moderates panel at UNC

Gerald R. Knight, assistant professor of music and coordinator for music education, was recently appointed editor-in-chief of the Journal of Emerging Trends in Educational Research and Policy Studies.  The journal welcomes articles on educational policy and leadership related to a variety of disciplines and educational settings. 

Knight has served on the Board of Editors since 2009. 

In addition, Knight has been invited to moderate a panel discussion at UNC-Chapel Hill titled, “Spiritual versus Art Song: Issues of Interpretation."  Panelists include Dr. Willis Patterson and Dr. Uzee Brown; both are distinguished scholars who are noted for their publications of art songs and spirituals.  Dean Willis Patterson, retired associate dean of the Earl V. Moore School of Music at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, published the collection Art Songs by Black American Composers, it is the definitive compilation of art song literature of this type in print. 

Dr. Uzee Brown, chair of the Department of Music at Morehouse College, noted arranger and composer, published his own arrangements in a collection entitled O Redeemed!-- it is standard in the spiritual and concert repertoire. Herbie Hancock and the renowned soprano, Leona Mitchell, are just a few of the prominent performers and scholars who will participate in the festival called Videmus@25. Knight is also excited to be one of the soloists invited to sing on one of the concerts of the festival. 

The festival examines the contributions made to classical music by women, African Americans and underrepresented composers. Festival dates are March 21-24 and the event is sponsored by The University of North Carolina Department of Music, Department of History, UNC Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, The Institute for African American Research, The Center for the Study of the South, Center for Black Music Research, and The National Association of Negro Musicians.
