Elon senior wins honors at National Sales Challenge
Alessandra Losa ’14, a marketing and journalism double major, topped more than 100 students last month in the speed-selling event at the Russ Berrie Institute National Sales Challenge.
Senior Alessandra Losa took first place in the speed-selling event and second place overall at the 2013 Russ Berrie Institute National Sales Challenge at William Paterson University in New Jersey.
Losa and senior Laura Beckstead both placed in the top 10 in the sales call role-play event, with Losa placing eighth and Beckstead fifth. As a team, Elon placed second overall during the Nov. 13-15, 2013, competition.
The three-day competition brought together more than 100 students from 37 universities and involved two events. In the speed-selling event, students met individually with executives to give two-minute pitches on why he or she should be hired. The sales call role-play event had students engage in a 15-minute meeting with a business executive to identify needs and present a solution.
“These competitions are an amazing way for students to learn the ins and outs of sales in a ‘controlled’ environment,” said Losa, a marketing (sales) and journalism double major from Wilmington, N.C. “There is nothing like practicing for the real world, and competitions give you exactly that.”
Faculty coach Michael Rodriguez, assistant professor of marketing and director of the Chandler Family Professional Sales Center, along with student coaches Peter Goltz ‘16, Kensey Gooch ‘14, Nicole Manning ‘14, Erin McGuiggan ‘14 and Davis Millians ‘14, accompanied Losa and Beckstead to the competition.
“My biggest takeaway from this experience is how important team chemistry and cohesiveness really is,” Losa said. “I would never have been able to do as well without the team I had surrounding me and motivating me every step of the way.”
