Elon University junior Katherine Blunt was awarded a business journalism internship as part of the Reynolds Visiting Business Journalism Professors Program.
Since 2012, the program, which has placed visiting professors in business journalism on nine campuses, including Elon’s, permits students from those campuses to compete for internships.
Blunt, a journalism and history double major from Maryland, will be interning this summer at the Colorado Springs Gazette, where she will cover business stories. Blunt, the former news editor at The Pendulum, is a Lumen Scholar whose research project is titled “The Power of the Fourth Estate: Media Framing of Six Prominent Political Leaders at the Height of Conflict.”
She interned with the News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., in summer 2013.
"I want to become a business journalist because business plays a central role in the life of every news consumer," she said.
The Reynolds Visiting Business Journalism Professors Program is funded by a $1.67 million, five-year grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. Elon is among nine campuses to have hosted visiting professors. Current visiting assistant professor Dianne Finch was the School of Communications’ Reynolds professor in spring 2013.
Students from Central Michigan University and Texas Christian University were also accepted into the program, which is administered by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism.
Since 2003, the Reynolds Center has helped more than 20,000 journalists learn to cover business better through free training. It is funded by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, a national philantrhopic organization founded in 1954 by the late media entrepreneur for whom it is named. Headquartered in Las Vegas, it has committed more than $145 million nationwide through its Journalism Program.
