Hometown Heroes ceremony Nov. 9

Four Hometown Heroes will be on campus and honored at a campus-wide ceremony on Monday, Nov. 9, 4-5 pm, McKinnon Hall. Everyone is invited to attend and hear the stories of the people who are making a difference by touching lives and strengthening their home communities. The Heroes were nominated and selected by the Class of 2013.

Logan Aldridge, Greenville, N.C.
Nominated and introduced by Alexander Stevenson
in connection with Jim Donathan’s Elon 101 class
Award presented by Austin Williamson, Treasurer

As a freshman at East Carolina University, Logan Aldridge has achieved many feats that few could reach. Following a wake-boarding accident in 2004, Logan created Beyond Expectations, a non-profit organization to help children who were injured playing extreme sports. He has also developed a passion for inspirational speaking and travels around the country to motivate and encourage injured young children.

William Hastings, Pipersville, Pa.
Nominated and introduced by Caroline Spall
in connection with Jane Wellford’s Elon 101 class
Award presented by Ben Waldon, Senator

While an English teacher at Falmouth High School and adviser to the school newspaper, William Hastings inspired students to take their publication to new heights. In that process, and following an editorial battle with school administrators, Hastings ultimately put his job on the line to stand up for the students’ creative work in the face of opposition.

Heather Meyer, Winter Park, Florida
Nominated and introduced by Ashley Braun
in connection with Carol Smith’s Elon 101 class
Award presented by Allie Weller, Secretary

Heather Meyer is an active participant with Hope for Haiti , a non-profit charitable organization providing education, nutrition and health care to Haitian children. At great personal sacrifice Heather has spent many summers traveling to Haiti, transporting donations of essential items and letters from pen pals. As a dance teacher Heather launched the Dance Abilities program, providing free classes and multiple performances for children with Down Syndrome who dream of performing.

Kevin O’Brien, Apex, N.C.

Nominated and introduced by Molly O’Brien
in connection with Lauren Martin’s Elon 101 class
Award presented by Liz Burns, Senator

At age 16 Kevin battled alcohol addiction that eventually cost him his college career and nearly ruined his life. With the support of his family and the strength of his faith, Kevin has enjoyed 13 years of sobriety. Today, serving both his church and his community as Director of Recovery Ministries at Apex United Methodist Church, Kevin uses his experience with addiction to help others through their own struggles with substance abuse.

Also, freshman vocalists and an accompanist will be performing at this annual event.
Hometown Heroes is sponsored by the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life.
