Dan Anderson, director of college relations, moderated a session on college ranking guides at the Council on the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III conference in Atlanta, Feb. 18-20. Also attending the conference were Nan Perkins, vice president for institutional advancement, Richard Puchyr, director of Web content and design, and Mandy Dixon, Web writer.

The Office of College Relations took seven awards in the annual CASE District III competition. The awards included the Total Publications Grand Award, recognizing Elon's entire year's work in publications.

The awards recognize the outstanding work during 2000 by the Office of College Relations staff: Carolyn Nelson, Jaleh Hagigh, Christopher Eyl, David Hibbard, Richard Puchyr, Mandy Dixon, Holley Berry and Dan Anderson.




Andy Angyal, professor of English, attended the "Solar Connections" workshop on Feb. 24 in Greensboro, N.C. Sponsored by the Guilford County Extension Center and North Carolina A&T University, the workshop featured demonstrations of new solar and photovoltaics technology.


Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music and education, had his cover article on Charles Lloyd published in the March/April 2001 issue of Saxophone Journal. He also gave two band clinics at Apex High School in Apex, N.C., Feb. 21.
Heidi Glaesel, assistant professor of geography, has been awarded a 2001 Fulbright-Hays award to study contemporary social issues in Argentina. Under the Mutual Education and Cultural Exchange (Fulbright-Hays) Act of 1961, approximately 160 U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities are selected to participate in this program each year. Glaesel will use the grant to enhance her own courses with Latin American content and to strengthen campus links to the region by formally assessing Elon's study abroad program in Argentina, identifying internship opportunities and gathering program-specific materials. This is Glaesel's third Fulbright award; she also received Fulbrights for dissertation research in Kenya in 1995-96 and to obtain advanced Swahili language training in Tanzania in 1995.



Gene Gooch, associate professor of chemistry, had an article published in a recent edition of The Chemical Educator journal. The article describes a new undergraduate laboratory which allows analysis of oils and fats to test their level of saturation.



David Hibbard, news bureau director, and Dan Anderson, director of college relations, attended the College News Association of the Carolinas (CNAC) spring meeting in Charleston, S.C., March 25-27.



Byung Lee, assistant professor of communications, had his article, "Users' Perspective on Regulation to Protect Privacy on the Web," published in the International Information and Library Review (Academic Press), 32, 379-402.
Maurice Levesque, assistant professor of psychology, was recently elected to a three-year term as a councilor for the Psychology Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research. The councilors are the governing body of the organization. Levesque also had an article published recently. Coauthored with David A. Kenny and Cynthia Mohr of the University of Connecticut, "A Social Relations Variance Partitioning of Dyadic Behavior" was published in the January 2001 issue of Psychological Bulletin, one of the leading journals in psychology. Levesque and Mary Wise, associate dean of academic affairs, co-wrote an article for the March edition of CUR Quarterly, the Council on Undergraduate Research journal. The article discusses experiential education at Elon, with a focus on undergraduate research and Elon's undergraduate research program.



Jon Metzger, assistant professor of music, directed the Elon Jazz Ensemble at the East Coast Jazz Festival in Rockville, Md., Feb. 18. His own ensemble, the Jon Metzger Quartet, also played as a headline act in the main ballroom during the festival.



Tim Peeples, assistant professor of professional writing and rhetoric, addressed the need for both general and site-specific knowledge in the professional writing curriculum during a speech at the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing conference in Denver, March 14.
