Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music, had two articles published recently. "Pushing the Envelope: An Interview with Dave Douglas," was published in the March 2002 issue of the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Erdmann's cover article on Jay Beckenstein was published in the March/April 2002 issue of Saxophone Journal.

  Toddie Peters, assistant professor of religious studies and Distinguished Emerging Scholar, received the Jepson Award for Outstanding Dissertation in Leadership Studies from the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond. The presentation was made during a colloquium March 23-24. Peters gave a presentation about her research at the colloquium, and she will receive a stipend for the juried award. Rebecca Todd Peters
  David Powell, chair of computing sciences, recently co-authored a manuscript published in the Journal of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. Powell co-authored the manuscript, titled "Interdigitation for Effective Design Space Exploration Using iSIGHT," with Patrick Koch and John Evans. Koch and Evans are employees of Engineous Software, Inc., in Cary, N.C., which develops and sells iSIGHT software.

  Gabie Smith, assistant professor of psychology, recently co-authored an article that appeared in the APS Observer, which is published by the American Psychological Society. "Parting Ways: Ending Your Course," which Smith co-authored with Tami Eggleston of McKendree College, describes techniques that can be used by faculty in a variety of disciplines to provide closure at the end of a course.   Elon was recognized recently for its contributions to the Campus Program of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning with the Carnegie Certificate of Achievement. The award recognized Elon's work on a three-year initiative to promote the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning program. Headed by Deborah Thurlow-Long, associate professor of education, and John Sullivan, the Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Philosophy, Elon's initiative focuses on the importance of students to the teaching-learning endeavor, and to its study.   Several members in the performing arts department led a group of 41 Elon students to the Southeastern Theatre Conference, held March 6-10 in Mobile, Ala. Bill Webb, technical director, presented selected lighting designs from Elon's recent productions of Rags, Macbeth and others. Other faculty members at the conference were Catherine McNeela, associate professor of performing arts, Richard Gang, assistant professor of theatre arts, and Dale Becherer, assistant professor of theatre arts.  
  Two books by Anthony Weston, professor of philosophy, were featured in a recent publication by Oxford University Press. "A 21st Century Ethical Toolbox," published in 2000, and "A Practical Companion to Ethics," published in 2001, were among the texts listed in "Philosophy: New and Recent Texts, 2002." The catalog features Oxford University Press texts in disciplines such as ethics, philosophy, logic, epistemology and metaphysics. Anthony Weston
