| Several members of the residence life staff attended the North Carolina Housing Officer Conference, held Oct. 11-13 at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. David Blackman, assistant dean of students and director of residence life, facilitated a roundtable discussion on the topic, "Learning Communities of the Future," which involved a panel of colleagues from Duke University, Lenoir-Rhyne College and UNC-Greensboro. Tara Morlando, assistant director of residence life - East Area, served as subcommittee chair of the Best of NCHO Awards. Celeste Young, former assistant director of residence life - West Area, served as the conference program chair, coordinating 37 programs and five subcommittees. She was also elected as a member-at-large for the organization. | |

"The Power of Positive Teaching," which De Journett co-authored with colleague David Wilson at the University of Mississippi, appeared in the National Federation of Interscholastic Music Association Journal, Vol. 16, No. 2, 1999-2000. | |
| Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music, judged at several marching band festivals during the fall, including Bluestone High School, Skipwith, Va., on Oct. 14; Dan River High School, Ringgold, Va., on Oct. 21; Northwest Guilford High School, Greensboro, N.C., on Oct. 28; and Tunstall High School, Dry Fork, Va., on Nov. 4. | |

| Clyde Ellis, associate professor of history, delivered the keynote address at the 36th annual Social Studies Symposium at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., on Sept. 29. Ellis' address, titled "American Indians and the American Century: The Construction of Memory," was based on his recent research and publications on contemporary Southern Plains powwow culture. | |
| Anne Bolin, professor of sociology, had her opinion piece titled "Age Equality for Women" published in the September 2000 edition of Steel Jungle Publications, 9 (33):5. Bolin's piece dealt with gender disparity in age categories for competitive women bodybuilders. | |
| Bruce Brown, director of development research, chaired a development research workshop at Elon on Oct. 20 for colleagues at institutions in North and South Carolina. One of the sessions featured Jerry Tolley, major gifts officer, and former staff member Drew Van Horn. The day was filled with excitement for Bruce, who had to jump in and facilitate a session on an hour's notice when a panelist had car trouble! | |
| Vickie Somers, director of purchasing, attended the National Association of Educational Buyers Carolinas regional meeting Oct. 29 - Nov. 1 in Asheville, N.C. Vickie closed out her term as regional president with a record number of attendees (90) and vendor exhibits (35) at the meeting. | |
| John Sullivan, Powell Professor of Philosophy, co-wrote an article that appeared in the November 2000 edition of the American Association for Higher Education Bulletin. Titled "Going Public," the article, which Sullivan co-wrote with Carmen Werder from Western Washington University, focuses on Elon's joint work with Western Washington on the scholarship of teaching and learning. The project is funded through a "Going Public" grant from the Campus Program, the primary activity of AAHE's Teaching Initiatives. | |
| Grahaeme Hesp, director of Greek life, has been appointed North Carolina Area Coordinator for 2001 by the Association of Fraternity Advisors. In that role, Grahaeme will report to the organization's southeastern vice president while coordinating the efforts of fraternity and sorority advisors at North Carolina colleges and universities. | |
| Janie Brown, professor of HPLHP, is working with two Elon alumni who are teachers at Walter Williams High School in Burlington. Janie works with Ruth Ann Phillips '73 and Mark Kadlesic '99 through the Physical Education Partnership in Sport Education program, a partnership of 10 colleges and universities and 10 public high schools. Elon provides senior physical education majors to assist in teaching PE from a model that advocates sport education as the best approach to high school PE. Janie will also compile research on this topic. | |

| Helen Binkley, assistant professor of sports medicine, gave an update on committee work regarding the Exertional Heat Illness Position statement at the National Athletic Trainers Association annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn., on July 2. She also made a presentation titled "Aquatic Exercise for Cross Training" at the National Strength and Conditioning Association's state meeting, held at Elon on July 15. | |

| Byung Lee, assistant professor of communications, presented three papers in October: --"Strategies for Determining Reader Interest and Their Usefulness," at the 115th National Newspaper Association's annual convention, Louisville, Ky. --"Users' Perspective on Regulation to Protect Privacy on the Web," at the fourth Ethics of Electronic Information in the 21st Century annual convention, Memphis, Tenn. --an article he co-authored with Wonhi Synn, associate professor of business administration,"Why Do Investors Go Online for Stock Trading?", presented at the 16th International Society for the Scientific Study of Subjectivity annual convention in Tulsa, Okla. | |
| Quill Magazine's September issue printed "Preventing Good People from Making Bad Decisions," which was based on "Evaluating the Effectiveness of a Mass Media Ethics Course" in Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, an article Lee wrote with George Padgett, associate professor of communications. Lee also had his article, "Information Privacy: How Much Privacy Protection Does the Public Want on the Web?", published in Operant Subjectivity 2000, 23(4), 170-191. | |
