Jim Donathan, associate director of academic advising, was featured in a full-page profile in The Kappa Alpha Journal, the fraternity's national magazine. Donathan was named Volunteer of the Quarter. He has been advisor to Elon's Epsilon Mu chapter since 1994. Donathan told the magazine this role helps him get to know a group of students in an environment outside the usual faculty-student interactions. In 1999-2000, Donathan was named Kappa Alpha Faculty Advisor of the Year and Elon's Administrative Staff Member of the Year.

  Clyde Ellis, associate professor of history, is spending the spring semester as the Gordon Russell Visiting Associate Professor in the Native American Studies Program at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Ellis is teaching a course on Southern Plains powwow culture. He is also conducting seminars on Native American issues in association with his most recent book on the Kiowa community of Oklahoma.

Ellis is a historian trained in ethnography. He is interested in understanding how and why Indian people -- especially on the Southern Plains -- have adapted to change in order to maintain important cultural values and practices. His recent publications include works on boarding schools, powwow culture, and Christian missions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

  Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music, had his article, "An Interview With Freddie Hubbard," and two book reviews (on "Improvisation: Bridging the Gap," by Ron Nairn, and "Maximum Master: 12 Jazz Etudes," by Tim Hagans, et al.) published in the January issue of the International Trumpet Guild Journal.   Paul Fromson, director of the Winter Term London program and associate professor of psychology, was interviewed by BBC News in Stratford, England. BBC reporters were on hand to interview people who came to visit the site of William Shakespeare's birth. The report, along with Fromson's sound bite, aired Jan. 8. Paul Fromson
  Vickie Somers, director of auxiliary services, attended the National Association of College Auxiliary Services meeting in New Orleans Nov. 4-7. Vickie Somers
  Sharon Spray, assistant professor of political science and director of the Elon University Poll, was interviewed by the North Carolina Political Review. Spray discussed the state's upcoming political contests in a story which appeared on the Review's Web site. The Political Review is a non-partisan, non-profit public service organization designed to encourage citizenship and promote informed debate about the many issues affecting North Carolina and the nation.

  Jerome Sturm, Web content creator, had several of his photographs published in the Operation Smile International 2002 calendar. The images were taken during his work as a volunteer photographer for the organization while on assignment in Quito, Ecuador. Additionally, his work has been featured in the charity's annual report and on its Web site. He has also volunteered as a mission photographer for the North Carolina chapter of Operation Smile.   Barbara Taylor, associate professor of computing sciences and coordinator of educational technology for teacher education, presented a session at the annual North Carolina Educational Technology Conference in Greensboro Nov. 29.
