Our In the Spotlight feature sheds light on different departments or events on campus. This month, we recognize Elon staff members who were honored during Staff Appreciation Day. |
| President Leo M. Lambert recognized the winners of this year's Staff Member of the Year awards during Staff Appreciation Day, Thursday, May 24. This year's winners are: |

| Physical Plant Staff Member of the Year: Wendy Williams Wendy, a member of the landscaping team, has been described by her co-workers as the epitome of the word "dedication." As a gardener, Wendy works all over campus planting flowers, pruning bushes and using her green thumb to add the finishing touches that make Elon beautiful. Wendy is known for being passionate about her work -- whether the weather cooperates or not! She had a close call during the violent windstorm that struck campus suddenly in May 2000, but she quickly jumped in to help out with the clean-up efforts. Wendy has worked at Elon since July 1993. Office Staff Member of the Year: James McCall As print services manager, James knows the importance of good customer service. In fact, he has helped turn the print services into one of the most customer-oriented departments at Elon! Those who nominated James for the award noted his willingness to go beyond the call of duty to get jobs done and the thoughtful attention to detail that he puts into his work. James is known as a dedicated employee who will eat lunch at his desk to meet deadlines and schedule vacations only during "slow" times at the print services. James has worked at Elon since October 1995. Administrative Staff Member of the Year: Mike Magoon It's easy to see why Mike Magoon, who was recently promoted to assistant vice president for institutional advancement, won this award -- just ask his department! Says one co-worker, "Day after day, night after night, week after week, year after year, he has held the department together by providing a great example of a strong work ethic and by approaching problems with a level head." Called "the driving force" behind the successful Elon Vision campaign, Mike is known for his ability to keep things running smoothly during transitional periods and his quiet leadership style. These skills have made Mike a respected mentor and trainer in institutional advancement. Mike has worked at Elon since November 1995. The
seventh-annual Staff
Appreciation Day allowed staff to enjoy various interesting and informative
seminars during the morning. Staff had the chance to learn about Cajun cooking,
tour the seldom-seen nooks and crannies of Elon, and find out what goes
into growing sod for the new Rhodes Stadium, as well as a host of other
topics. What else happened on Staff Appreciation Day? Plenty! Click here to see pictures like the one at the right! |
