Leah Kessler, director of internships for the School of Communications
Leah's experience as a student in Elon's School of Communications
and as an associate producer at WFMY-TV in Greensboro will give her
a head start in her new role at the university. Targeting internship
opportunities for communications students and following up with employers
to check students' progress will be her main responsibilities.
Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Leah earned a degree in broadcast
communications from Elon in 2001. While a student, she served two
different internships with WFMY, which paved the way for her to land
a full-time position as associate producer right after graduation.
"It shows you how having an internship can open doors. The work
I did at WFMY led to a full-time job," she says.
Leah enjoys spending time with her son, Jacob, 2, and her dogs, Maxwell
and Jonas. It's an exciting time for her as a parent, she says, because
Jacob seems to learn something new everyday. She also admits that
it's hard work! "Sleeping has become my idea of a good time,"
she laughs.
Painting and reading are among her favorite hobbies, although she
says she does "everything and anything that looks like it might
be fun." She just finished reading "Tuesdays with Morrie"
by Mitch Albom. Leah is also interested in studying history, the media
and child-related issues. |
Kelley
Mills, assistant director of residence life operations and information
management
Kelley comes to Elon from the North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics, where she was a residential student services assistant.
She was in charge of work service and student activities, and hopes
to broaden her skills and abilities in those areas here. "I really
wanted to continue my career in student services, and I also enjoy
the Triad. Coming to Elon has helped me accomplish both of those things,"
Kelley says.
An only child who grew up in Spring Hope, N.C., Kelley earned a bachelor's
degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. Kelley's large, extended family has
"lots of 'surrogate' nieces and nephews" who keep her busy.
She enjoys spending time with her best friend, who she went to high
school with but didn't know at the time. "We met five years after
graduating from high school, and we've been inseparable ever since!"
She enjoys the theatre (especially Triad Stage in Greensboro), traveling
and her latest hobby -- learning to cook! Kelley also enjoys shopping,
going to the movies, photography and a variety of music, including
contemporary Christian, oldies, and rhythm and blues. |
Emma
Sanders, study abroad and international student advisor
Emma may actually have a chance to stop and catch her breath now that
she's on campus and working in the Isabella Cannon Centre for International
Studies. After the year she's had, who could blame her? "The
past year was full. I received my degree, moved to London, got married
and moved back," Emma says. "All of it was incredible!"
After earning a bachelor's degree from UNC-Asheville last May,
Emma moved to London and enjoyed traveling in Great Britain and Europe.
In September, she and her husband, Dustin, were married and established
a home across the road from Jordan Lake. "On the weekend, we
love to take our miniature Yorkshire terrier, Chloe, down to the lake
to hike around!"
Emma says she is an avid supporter of small universities, something
which attracted her to Elon. "Personal relationships with faculty
and staff are such a crucial part of having a great college experience,"
she says. She learned this firsthand at UNC-Asheville. She also came
to Elon to join her mother, Dianne Ford, who just began work in January
as a clerk in Belk Library.
Emma has studied newspaper portrayals of student protestors during
the Vietnam War, as well as television's effect on the viewer's sense
of trust. "I'm very interested in media studies, both in how
media portrays different sections of society and the psychological
effect media has on people."
In her spare time, Emma enjoys singing and cooking with Dustin, a
chef at a French restaurant in Chapel Hill. "Anything he cooks
is my favorite," Emma says. "Southern and French foods are
his specialty!" |
