Bruce
Nelson, director of counseling services
Bruce is looking forward to becoming involved in campus life at Elon,
and he sees a multitude of opportunities in his new position as director
of counseling services. "The opportunity to work with students and
colleagues in a stimulating environment is very exciting for me,"
he says.
A graduate of the University of Washington, Bruce also holds master's
degrees from Appalachian State University and the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. Bruce has a diverse counseling background in
North Carolina, having worked at John Umstead Hospital, the Department
of Family Medicine at UNC, Orange-Person-Chatham Mental Health and United
Family Services in Charlotte. The prevention of violence in academic settings
is one of his key research interests.
Bruce and his wife, Lauren, have a four-year-old daughter, Lyn. He is
an avid outdoorsman who has climbed Mt. Ranier and biked the entire Blue
Ridge Parkway. A member of the Durham Tennis League, Bruce says trying
to improve his tennis game is among his favorite hobbies, along with landscaping.
