  Andy Angyal, professor of English, has been invited to take part in the Carolina Seminars, monthly meetings of faculty, administrators and public officials. The meetings, which will be held at the University Center for International Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will focus on ecology and social change. Andy Angyal
  Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music, had his cover article on Larry Carlton published in the October/November 2001 issue of Jazz Player magazine.

Erdmann also judged several marching band festivals recently. He judged the music category at the 24th annual Old Dominion Dixie Classic Marching Band Festival in Virginia on Sept. 22. He was the music judge at the Trojan Marching Band Festival at Tunstall High School in Dry Fork, Va., on Oct. 6, and was the music general effect judge at the Dan River High School Festival of Bands in Ringgold, Va., on Oct. 20.

  Maria Falbo, associate professor of physics, attended a conference titled "Planning for the National Underground Science Laboratory," held in Lead, S.D., Oct. 4-7. The NUSL offers the unique potential to explore a wide range of science in the world's deepest underground laboratory. The lab will be located in the Homestake Mine, a South Dakota gold mine which will close this winter and will then be operated by the U.S. Department of Energy. Falbo was invited to discuss planning of the lab and its use in undergraduate research activities.

Falbo is also planning a colloquium titled "Seeing the Stars from Inside the Earth: Planning the World's Deepest Underground Laboratory." The colloquium is scheduled for 6-7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28, in McMichael 115.

 
  Maurice Levesque, associate professor psychology, published an article titled "Self-Handicapping as a Method of Self-Presentation: An Analysis of Costs and Benefits" in Current Research in Social Psychology, a peer-reviewed online journal. The journal is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Group Processes at the University of Iowa. Levesque co-authored the article with Charles A. Lowe, professor of psychology at the University of Connecticut, and Catherine Mendenhall, a former student who worked with Levesque.

Levesque also gave a presentation titled "Personal Relationships and the Social Relations Model" at the Society of Experimental Social Psychology annual conference, held Oct. 17-21 in Spokane, Wash. Levesque's presentation was part of a symposium on the various applications of the social relations model, which is a methodological and statistical model for the study of interpersonal perception and behavior. One of the studies he presented was conducted on campus with several Elon undergraduate researchers.

 
  Alan White, director of athletics, received the first Distinguished Service in Sports Award Oct. 16. White received the award from the Sports Development Council, which operates under the Burlington/Alamance County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The award honors White's role in bringing recognition to Alamance County through Elon's athletics program and his contributions to the county's sports scene. Alan White
