Carlos Alvarez Carlos Alvarez, assistant director, El Centro de Español

Carlos joined El Centro earlier this year and says he thoroughly enjoys his job. He came to Elon from Spain, where he taught at several English academies, most recently Sidney Idiomos. Carlos earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English language and literature from the University of Valladolid in Spain.

Carlos enjoys studying all languages, as well as meeting new people, dancing and reading. Spanish titles dominate his lists of favorites, including "Hijos de la Tierra," a series of four books. He also enjoys the music of Miguel Bosé and Ana Torroja, and his favorite movie is "Todo Sobre Mi Madre."

Carlos has a brother, Santiago Alvarez-Santos, and a sister, Ana Alvarez-Santos, who still live in Spain with his parents, Eulogio Alvarez and Enedina Santos.
Brooke Barnett Brooke Barnett, assistant professor of communications

Brooke became an active member of the Elon faculty almost immediately, taking part in a seminar on media coverage about the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Her opinions on the topic went hand-in-hand with her research interests, which include media law and television news.

After earning a bachelor's degree at Georgetown College, Brooke received her master's degree and a doctorate from Indiana University, where she also taught. She counts Elon's attractive campus, friendly atmosphere and emphasis on study abroad among the reasons she decided to come here.

Brooke and her husband, Tom Mould, have a daughter, Lily.
David Copeland David Copeland, associate professor of communications

David was enchanted by Elon's campus when he first visited here, but he says the people and the facilities were the main reason he decided to join the faculty. "The opportunities for research and the people at Elon are outstanding," says the A.J. Fletcher Professor of Communications.

David, who was a faculty member at Emory and Henry College in Virginia before coming here, enjoys listening to and playing all types of music. He has a variety of research interests, including religion and media, media history and colonial American media.

Familiarity with the surrounding area isn't a problem for David, who earned a bachelor's degree at Wake Forest University and a doctorate at the University of North Carolina. He also earned master's degrees in divinity and theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He and his wife, Robin, have a daughter, Holly, and a son, Hunter.
Vic Costello Vic Costello, associate professor of communications

Vic says he is thrilled to be a part of the Elon family, thanks to the tremendous facilities, faculty and students in the School of Communications. "This is a very exciting place to be at a very exciting time," Vic says. He says he is also impressed with the long-range vision Elon incorporates into its planning.

Vic's research interests include new communication technologies and the habits of television and Internet users.

A graduate of Western Carolina University, Vic holds a master's degree from Regent University and a doctorate from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He and his wife, Beth, enjoy a variety of fun activities with their four children, Sarah, Lydia, Samuel and Thomas. Vic also enjoys a good workout on the racquetball court when time allows.
James Crawford James Crawford, instructor in history

James, a native of Muncy, Pa., was employed as an instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Greensboro College before coming to Elon in August. A graduate of Penn State University, James has completed a master's degree and is working toward a doctorate at the University of North Carolina.

At work, his research interests include U.S. foreign relations and modern political economy. But things really get interesting for James after work; his idea of fun things to do include swimming in the Haw River and a not-so-well-known sport called dumpster diving. James does have some other, more conventional hobbies, such as carpentry, gardening and softball.

He and his wife, Maureen Ahmad, have a daughter, Elise, who is 4. The also have two tabby cats, Jeb and Snip, and a rabbit named Tiger Lily.
Joel Karty Karty Joel Karty, assistant professor of chemistry

Joel traveled across the country from Stanford University, where he recently earned his doctorate, to join the Elon faculty. He cites the excellent chemistry department and McMichael science building's fabulous facilities among the chief reasons he accepted a position here. Joel and his wife, Valerie, also like Elon's small school atmosphere, ideal location and friendly people.

An outdoor enthusiast, Joel enjoys playing basketball and golf, as well as rowing. He also isn’t afraid to try the latest, most difficult brainteaser puzzles he can put his hands on! Joel enjoys movies and says his favorite film is "Real Genius," the 1985 comedy starring Val Kilmer and William Atherton.
Cassie Kircher Cassie Kircher, professor of English

Cassie joins the Elon faculty on a full-time basis after working as a part-time faculty member at both Elon and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a bachelor's degree from Macalester College, a master's degree from the University of Colorado and a doctorate from the University of Iowa.

Cassie is no stranger to Elon; her husband, Kevin Boyle, is an Elon faculty member. A native of Omaha, Neb., Cassie enjoys play time with her daughters, Tess, 6, and Marina, 4. And when she's hungry, Cassie admits that she can be tempted by any sort of Italian dish!

She's also an outdoors enthusiast who lists hiking, mountaineering and running among her hobbies. Cassie was able to incorporate her love for the outdoors with her previous job as a park ranger in the Rocky Mountain National Park, something she did for seven years before entering education.

Cassie lists American nature writing and the writing of fiction and nonfiction among her research interests.
Remi Lanzoni Rémi Lanzoni, assistant professor of foreign languages

Rémi came to Elon in August from Monmouth University in New Jersey. He has been busy working toward a doctorate in Italian from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and he will complete that degree in December. He also holds a doctorate in French from Florida State University.

Rémi says he and his wife, Kristin, and their son, Simon, were attracted to Elon because of its location and liberal arts curriculum. During the rare moments when he finds some spare time on his hands, Rémi enjoys pursuing his research interest in film studies.
Tom McCarthy Tom McCarthy, assistant professor of history

Tom, a Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellow in the Humanities, comes to Elon from Yale University. He says he is intrigued by Elon's curriculum and its focus on students. "Elon has a commitment to bridging the liberal arts to the real world," Tom says, adding that he is impressed by the demonstrable improvements Elon has made in recent years.

Among Eileen's research interests are women's studies, feminist studies and Latin American writers. She also enjoys classical music and folk music by Latin American artists. She lists biographies and memoirs as her favorite types of books.

Eileen taught in the public schools in Windham, Conn., before moving to North Carolina with her husband, Bill Jarrett, and their two children, Alejandro, 13, and Juliana, 7.
Chrisine Nemcik NemcikChristine Nemcik, instructor in history

The move to Elon from Indiana University is quite a switch for Christine, but one that she relishes. "After spending years at a large state research university, I very much wanted to teach at a small, liberal arts university with a sense of community."

Christine completed her doctorate at Indiana in late September, and she also holds a master's degree from Indiana. She earned a bachelor's degree from Illinois Wesleyan University.

Christine enjoys spending time in the kitchen, where she tries her hand at Latin American cooking, and she lists pottery among her favorite hobbies. A big Bruce Springsteen fan, Christine also enjoys reading, singling out "One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Márquez as her favorite book.

A dog named Rosalita and a 16-pound cat named Jackson are more than enough entertainment at home for Christine and her husband, Todd Richardson.
