Andy Angyal, professor of English, attended the Templeton Foundation's advanced faculty seminar titled "Interpreting Evolution," held June 14-19 at Haverford College, Haverford, Pa. He also attended a conference titled "Reconnecting with the Earth and Elder Wisdom," at the Glen Agape Retreat Center in Oak Ridge, N.C., June 21-23.

  Larry Basirico, chair of sociology and anthropology, was quoted in a June 5 Arizona Republic article about family reunions. Basirico discusses the dynamics involved in planning successful family reunions, the ideal length of reunions, and their importance in passing down family heritage and traditions. Larry Basirico
  Janie Brown, chair of health promotion, leisure and human performance, was recently selected to serve a three-year term on the board of directors of the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Janie Brown
  Tom Erdmann, associate professor of music, had his article on jazz keyboardist Rachel Z. published as the cover article in the August/September issue of Jazz Player magazine. Tom Erdmann
  Mike Kingston, assistant professor of biology, presented a paper titled "Vertical Migration of Euglena viridis on Scripps Beach, La Jolla, California," at the annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America in Estes Park, Colo., June 28. The paper summarized five days of intensive experimentation in July 2000, examining the behavior of unicellular algae that form green patches on the beach during low tide. This same species of algae forms green patches on stream banks in the Alamance County area during daylight hours in the summer.   Jo Watts Williams, special assistant to the president, was honored for 30 years of service to Elon during a portrait unveiling at Maynard House on Aug. 17. The portrait is a gift from her sons, William L. Williams III of Wilmington, N.C., and Randall W. Williams, M.D., of Raleigh. Williams began her career at Elon in 1969 as a faculty member in the department of psychology and education. A 1955 Elon graduate, she has served as special assistant to the president since 1996.

  Elon was well represented at the Association of American Colleges and Universities' 11th annual Asheville Institute on General Education, held June 2-6 at the University of North Carolina - Asheville. Steve Braye, associate professor of English, served as a team leader. Tom Henricks, professor of sociology, Greg Lilly, associate professor of economics, Nancy Midgette, associate provost, and Jean Schwind, associate professor of English, also attended the conference. The Asheville Institute offers teams of faculty and senior academic administrators learning opportunities to make general education programs more effective. Steve Braye
