Jamie Canada, secretary - health services

Jamie is eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child. Her daughter is due at the end of September, and she and her husband, Eddie, have picked the name Madeline Faith.

Jamie has prior experience working as a medical office technician. Her most recent job was at NovaTech Sciences in Greensboro.

She is excited about working closer to her home in Burlington, which leaves more time for recreational activities, like volleyball and softball. Her other love is reading. Recently, Jamie has read "The Rescue" and "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks.

Emily Goetz, assistant director of annual giving and director of reunion giving

Emily got a taste of development as a student at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va. "Working in development since I was a freshman in college is how I got to where I am today," Emily says, adding that she is proud of graduating from college and getting her first job.

She says she is amazed at "how beautiful the campus is and how nice the people are" at Elon. "Everyone I meet seems so hospitable," she says.

Originally from Lynchburg, Va., Emily earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and Asian studies, while also competing on the volleyball team. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family, as well as listening to every type of music from rap to country.

Amy Hadwin, human resources assistant

Amy graduated from Elon in 1998 with a degree in mathematics and is excited to be back. "The community feeling and the sense of purpose to educate today's students for a better tomorrow drew me back to Elon," she says. "I want to be part of making a difference!"

Before coming to Elon, Amy worked as a math teacher at Bartlett Yancey High School, a human resource specialist at Prime Personnel Resources, Inc., and an administrative assistant at Indalex Inc.

Amy says she has found joy in teaching geometry, placing people in great jobs and being there for her family. "My most gratifying moments occur when a project I've worked hard on becomes a reality," she says.

Amy enjoys all types of crafts, computers, photography and spending time with her husband, Wayne, who graduated from Elon in 1997. The couple has eight cats: Kit Kat, Mittens, Tigger, Callie, Patches, Cougar, Amber and Rudy.

Steven House, dean of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences

After living in New Jersey for the last 14 years, Steven and his wife, Patricia, are excited about trying North Carolina foods. They've had Cici's pizza and Lexington barbecue. The couple is always looking for suggestions, but Steven says "I have yet to acquire a taste for grits!"

Steven comes to Elon from Seton Hall University, where he was associate dean of the college of arts and sciences and a biology professor. He says he was attracted to Elon because of its commitment to creating a model of academic excellence. "I am excited about Elon's passion to form an educational model that promotes a relationship between learning and experience, sense and sensibility, fact and value," he says.

He has received several large grants to research the role of blood cells as a determinant of vascular function in health and disease. In his free time, Steven plays tennis, racquetball and golf.

When you visit Steven's office, you'll find that he is always listening to music. His favorites include Jackson Browne, James Taylor and U2. "What I find most disconcerting is that the music I enjoy now is 'elevator music.' I guess I have become my father," he says.

Fiona MacPherson, assistant volleyball coach

When Fiona graduated from Elon in 1999, she began working as a marketing coordinator with Sevista Technologies. Less than two years later, Elon was looking for an assistant volleyball coach, and Fiona returned to coach the team that she once played for. "I've always wanted to coach, and I got the opportunity to come back to Elon," says Fiona, who was the first Elon athlete to be honored with a national player of the week award at the NCAA Division II level.

Originally from West Palm Beach, Fla., Fiona loves to travel. Her travels have taken her to Europe, Canada and Costa Rica. Her favorite destination? London!
David Magee, director of the Elon Career Center

David brings years of experience as a consultant to his new role as director of the Elon Career Center.

He and his wife, Janice, have a son, David, 14, and three grown daughters, Heather, Laura and Bonnie. David enjoys traveling to the mountains or the coast, as well as camping, photography and canoeing.

David has a doctorate in higher education and a master's in counseling. He is currently a member of the Alamance County Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Julie Ollis, assistant director of residence life operations and information management

Julie has always been interested in working in a school environment. "I didn't care if it was elementary, high school or college. I really wanted to work with schools," says Julie, a Burlington native. She worked at Elon Elementary School as an administrative assistant before joining the university.

Julie has a degree in textile management from North Carolina State University. She and her husband, Gary, were married in January 2000, and they are members of Macedonia Lutheran Church.

She enjoys water sports, especially skiing, boating and fishing. When she isn't on the water, Julie enjoys reading, and she has read all four Harry Potter books. "I saw the kids reading them and talking about them, so I decided that I had to read them," she says.

Tiffany Pelletier, assistant director of residence life, East area

Tiffany is no stranger to the atmosphere of a university campus. She came to Elon from Western Illinois University, where she was program adviser for the bureau of cultural affairs. She holds a master's degree in college student personnel from Western Illinois, and she received her bachelor's degree in speech communication from Central Missouri State University.

A native of Caribou, Maine, Tiffany was lured south by Elon's campus and sense of community. She enjoys sports, going to concerts and reading. The last book she read was "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason."

The mellow jazz music Tiffany enjoys certainly doesn't reflect her outgoing personality. Her friends cite her sense of humor as one of her most charming qualities.

Lisa Ratliff Roper, assistant director of alumni and parent relations

Lisa, the new assistant director of alumni and parent relations, says people think she looks like student life secretary Janice Ratliff. "Contrary to popular belief, Janice is my sister-in-law, not my mother!" she says.

Lisa graduated from Elon in 1993 with a degree in human services. Her husband, Tony, graduated from Elon in 1990. The couple has a 12-year-old son, Quintin, and an 8-year-old daughter, Quierra.
Lisa has six brothers who are older than she is...a good bit older! "I'm 12 years younger than my youngest brother and 25 years younger than my oldest," she says.

Lisa enjoys singing, surfing the Internet, reading and "any meal with cheese!" She also serves as the scholarship fundraising chair for the Burlington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

J.R. Shortall, Web technologies programmer

J.R. loves hockey. Even his cats -- Gretzky and Gordie -- are named after hockey players. As a student at Elon, J.R. was president of the roller hockey club, and he now serves as league commissioner for the Atlantic Collegiate Roller Hockey Association, handling the day-to-day operations of the league.

When he's not playing hockey, J.R. enjoys designing Web sites and researching Web development and applications. He received a degree in computer science from Elon last May. As a student, he worked in university relations and information systems.

Robin Wood, accounting assistant

After almost 24 years with General Dynamics, it was "the location, the beauty of the campus and the benefits" that brought Robin to Elon.

A graduate of Cummings High School, Robin enjoys a variety of activities -- boating, fishing, gardening and sewing. Just as varied are her musical tastes. She could have the radio tuned to classic rock, country or even classical. "I would get tired of listening to the same old thing," she says.

Without hesitation, Robin says that becoming a mother was her most gratifying life experience. Be sure to look for Robin in the stands of Rhodes Stadium this football season; she'll be there cheering on her son, Patrick, who is a sophomore wide receiver for the Phoenix. Robin lives in Burlington with her husband, James, and daughter, Natalie.

Brooke Woolston, assistant director of residence life, West area

Brooke came to Elon in search of warmer weather. A native of Colton, N.Y., Brooke says, "I am tired of the snow and ice storms, although I am sure I will miss them come Christmas!"

Brooke joins the residence life staff as West area coordinator. She previously worked as a residence life coordinator at Elmira College in Elmira, N.Y. "I love working with people, especially college students," she says. "We have all been through those times, and it is nice to see others having a positive college experience."

Her favorite activities include going to the movies, shopping, cooking, and visiting friends and family. Brooke says she is known for having a unique laugh. "Some people say it is intoxicating and contagious," she says. "I personally think it is very loud!"
